The best verification I could come up with for this parent match is that it follows Scottish naming conventions at the time. Every single child of George and Janet matches a name from Janet's family or George's family if you use this suggested connection. This pattern follows in the proper order/sequence as well.
It's been a while, but IIRC this connection also passes a birthday verification by taking the ages listed in the 1841 and 1851 census records. IIRC you'll note they're either 9 or 11 years apart, not 10. These two censuses were performed a bit more than 2 months apart (March 30 and June 6). When you account for this gap and the age being off by a year, you can infer George, Janet's husband, was born between March 30 and June 6.
This two month gap lines up with the birth date of John Lindsay/Jean Clellan's George, being in April. I can't recall for certain, but my vague recollection is that all (or at least the VAST majority) of other potential candidates have birthdays outside of this range.
A much less significant verification is looking at the migration/travel patterns for Janet's George through marriage and child birth records. I believe they match a potential pattern using John/Jean's George's birth place. There have been other George Lindsay records which could also have followed a different logical travel patterns though.
I've never been able to find a definitive 100% connection, but between the above three verification points, the John/Jean parent connection is by far the best option I've seen and has passed every potential verification I've been able to come up with.
