Peck of Trouble

I need advice in untangling this lineage.

Two Henry Pecks are confused with each other.  I noticed it when the Data Doctors list said that Henry's dad Conrad Peck had died several years before Henry was born.

The problem is that Conrad Peck had a son named Henry, but he was a different Henry.  The Henry in the DD list is actually the grandson of Conrad and the son of Peter Peck. - another of Conrad's sons.

To make matters worse, there is another profile for Henry Peck.  This one is correctly linked to his father, Peter.  It also has more information in the profile.  But fewer sources.  I notice there is a proposed merge for the two Henrys.

So, I wonder if it is OK to simply copy over (manually merge) all the information in the profile for Conrad's son that actually belongs to his grandson.  This would also involve detaching each of the son's children and attaching them to the other Henry.  Because the children belong to the grandson. Then enter the correct profile for Conrad's son.  Finally to reject the merge.

Should I ask the two profile managers to do this?

Should I do it and tell them about it?

Should I just point out the problem to the manager of the grandson's profile and let him figure it out?

Is there some other way to untangle this mess?

Congratulations for figuring this out!

What a great question title.

This leads me to wonder, however, if [Peck-3005|Peter Peck]] could have married someone named Pickle (or maybe Dill). smiley

Props on the title - and for untangling this one!

You might first add a Research Note section to each of the affected profiles, giving your sources and reasoning for the proposed changes. Then you could contact the PMs and refer them to the profile notes, and if this is something you're willing to tackle, offer to make the changes for them.

These are pretty major changes so i wouldn't just do it without giving the PMs a shout first, and a reasonable time period to respond. If you don't hear back in say a week or two, go ahead and make the changes.

What you call a "manual merge" is really just moving data around to the correct profiles. You'll end up with the same names but with all their data in the right place and connected to the right parents and children. I see nothing wrong with this approach, and it avoids an unnecessary redirect.

Good luck!

I suggest you ask the Arborist project to help with this.  I also suggest that the merge be postponed until each of the individuals in question has his own profile with the information and relationship connections in place. There will be a lot less confusion this way.
