848 Error - how to find correct US History and other template formatting

In some of the 848 Errors, I see the info listed as {{US History|Connecticut}} when I am searching only for Connecticut errors.  Trying to find information on these stickers, projects, categories, etc can be very challenging in the wiki Help system.

Searching for US History showed a link for US History Project Templates, US History Project Stickers, US History Project.

  • Looking at the US History Project Templates page, I see 6 states, including Massachusetts and Connecticut, as examples.  Both of them are referring to using only {{Connecticut}} and {{Massachusetts}} for 'Project Boxes'
  • Looking at the US History Project stickers page - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:US_History_Project_Stickers, I see some states, ie 8, that have something.  Connecticut does not.  Massachusetts has a 'sticker' {{Massachusetts Sticker}}
  • Looking at the US History under the US History Project Templates, it has another template {{US History| sub-project = Tennessee}}.
    • Note - This looks like what I need to change to correct the 848 error on the profile since changing it from {{US History|Connecticut}} to {{US History|sub-project = Connecticut}} adds the Connecticut flag, instead of the United States flag, and states 'Connecticut Project'.  With the current 'error' coding, it has 'US History Project'
    • Changing it to {{Connecticut}}  also puts the Connecticut flag, instead of the United States flag, and states 'Connecticut Project', so this would be like the Project box mentioned above
  • Looking at the US History Project shows some states as sub-categories, but not the ones I was looking for.

1. It looks like 'Templates', 'Stickers' and 'Project Boxes' are being used for the same formatting, but different wording, which makes it confusing trying to know what Help page we should be looking at.  Maybe it is only the Help pages that need consistency, but I am not sure.

2. On the profile that has the 848 error for 'use of unnamed parameters' with US History, I am not sure which way it should be changed 'OR' if it matters if the 'US History' is placed in front or not at all.

3.  I am not sure how the 848 'help' page can refer back to all of these category / sticker / template pages since it is hard to even find what is being used.

Stickers and Project boxes are both based on templates. The templates all have the same coding, but are used for different purposes, which is where they get confused. Each one has a page which should contain the explanation of any parameters used. (for example: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Korean_War ) That one has quite a few parameters which must be filled in

"|branch=" is one parameter. So when using the sticker in a profile, you'd fill in that branch. Say you want to add it to a man in the US Army, the line would look like "|branch=United States Army".

The best places to look for guidance on any particular template are on the specific project page or on the template's own page.  You can find templates here:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Templates

In that category, the ones users will apply most often are under the subcategory Stickers or on Research Note Boxes. Project boxes are to be applied ONLY to profiles that have the specific project as a Profile Manager or Co-Manager.

This is generally quite simple to correct. In Info column, you see the template in question. That is US History in our case.

{{US HISTORY|CONNECTICUT}}

Then it is best to check the Template itself https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:US_History

It is the Project Box in our case. Here you can see all project Boxes https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Database_Errors_Definition_Templates/Project_box#United_States

And on template it says the correct usage is

{{US History
| sub-project = Tennessee
}}
So you should add sub-project = in front of Connecticut to get something like
{{US History|sub-project = Connecticut}}
But as you noted, some states have their own Project Box template, so you should use that one and that is just {{Connecticut}}

Thanks for giving Linda that thorough explanation, Aleš.

There's an additional issue here: WikiTree policy now indicates that the US History project box (or the Connecticut project box) is only to be used on profiles that are managed by the project.

The Sarah Belden profile may be one that the Connecticut project is willing to manage -- I can't tell for sure. Anne B is the Project Leader for Connecticut. She can decide whether the project wants to adopt this profile. If not, it could have a sticker (if a sticker is designed for Connecticut).
