i am looking for information regarding my GGG Grandmother Matilda Hicks born 1800 Georgia or Alabama, died in Texas (not sure on the spelling). I am told she was Cherokee and a black slave on the census in the household to Joseph Jackson and then Nathaniel Jackson. she had several children with Nathaniel ) my GGG grandfather, but she had 2-3 previous children too.

I read that someone found her on the Dawes Rolls, i have not been able to find anything. I did somehow find a father and mother etc. but, i am beginning to think they are not linked (like names were too common).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Your Matilda is not the woman on the Dawes Roll.  The Dawes only includes people who were living in Indian Territory and who were still alive in 1902.  Wilcox, Alabama where Nathaniel Jackson lived in 1840 was far away from the Cherokee Nation, so although there were Cherokee families named Hicks, I think it’s unlikely that Matilda was connected to them.  You might look for histories of Wilcox County for more clues.

While it is true that Matilda Jackson Rowland was born in Alabama, Both her parents (Matilda Hicks Jackson and Nathaniel Jackson were born in Georgia which is ancestral homeland of many Cherokee bands. Matilda Hicks therefor Matilda Jackson Rowland were certainly of African and European ancestry. However it is also entirely possible both were also of Cherokee ancestry.
Thank you for your information. I have done my DNA through Ancestry and was a bit shocked by the results. But i am wanting to know more. At present my family has several Historical Cemeteries on the border in Donna Texas where most are buried. President wants to demolish and build the WALL. We have protesters there trying to halt this. We have Attorneys who are working deligently to try and save our families in our cemeteries.
My name is Nate Rowland--son of Richard "Dick" Rowland who married Matilda J Rowland. My grandfather name was Peyton Rowland. Is it possible that I am related to the Historical family Cemeteries on the border in Donna, Texas...

Yes, I believe so. My skin just got goose bumps! Nathaniel Mathew Jackson and Matilda Hicks are my GGGreat Grandparents. Matilda Jackson (daughter).  Mostly all of the Families are buried in our Historical Cemeteries on the border. Including the Jackson Family Methodist Church Historical Marker. This is the one with all of the controversy regarding the Trump Border Wall.  I can send you a link. Also, your relative Peyton Rowland, if i am not mistaken i do recall that he is buried in Illinois. Union Illinois as a matter of fact. I live about an hour away. I will have to go visit and take pics.

I have done my DNA through Ancestry. I have matched up with many relatives. I am now going to be part of organizing the largest family reunion for 2020 Labor day weekend. The head of this event will be Joe Ramirez. we will also be starting a family newsletter to keep everyone up to date with new relatives projects and family stories. hope to keep in touch and WELCOME Family.
