In this case the problem is not the category, but the birth location field. It is not allowed to use the word "Unknown" in any of the place fields. So instead of entering "Unknown County, Texas, United States" in birth place field, it is recommended to enter: "Texas, United States".

Concerning categories: some states do have a "State, Unknown county" category which may be used when the state is known, but cannot be narrowed down to a specific county. It would be pointless to use it on the profile of Jimmie Dalton Adley, because the county where he died is known and he can be categorized there.

According to the changes it looks like someone added county Texas, which was than replaced with unknown county, which was recently removed as there is no such county as unknown

Hi, Rick,

You are the person entering the phrase, and it is being removed by one or more Data Doctors because it is generating an error on the suggestion report, There are no places called "Unknown County." A location that names only a country or state should be sufficient to indicate that the town and county are unknown without adding the superfluous phrase.

That's odd, because I had someone with a state project -- may have been Virginia -- specifically tell me I had to use their "Unknown county" category and not to use the state.
Yes, this was one of the places to use such a category as a "parking" place so that the PM's would refrain from using a top level category instead.

As far as I know, "Unknown County, State" categories have not yet been approved in the category structure, but categories are different from Birth and Death Place fields - which is where these changes are happening. If a city or county is unknown, you only use the information that is known (in this case, state and country).

.See Help:Location Fields for more information.

When the information is known you add it to the database field; the lack of the information being there is an indicator that it is unknown.
