There are Crawford's all over the world, and although it's unlikely we're all related, we are definitely connected smiley  If you are interested in helping out with this project, answer with your location and we'll get started!

My 3x great grandfather William Crawford came from Down, Ireland and moved to Newburgh Fife. His brother, James moved in Glasgow.
Hi Rosslyn!  Are you interested in helping with the study?  I'll add you to the list if you like.
Happy to join in

Wonderful smiley. I'll add you to the list

I'm a Canadian Crawford. I was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and received the Crawford name from my grandfather (my mom kept her original last name) who immigrated from Paisley, Scotland.
Hi Danielle!  I'm a Canadian Crawford too!  We're in Ontario, but have relatives all across the country.  I would be interested to see if we connect somewhere along the line.

Welcome aboard!

Amy
My paternal grandmother is a Crawford. There are a large number of the family based in Lanarkshire, but going back the majority of her line were born in Ardrossan, Ayrshire.
Hi Alana!  Welcome aboard!  I'll pm you shortly with information about the project.

Hi Joe, my ancestor Lazarus Crawford, looking for his family and parents info.
There is no Lazarus  Crawford in by family.
Hi Jan!  If you could provide a bit more information, I'd be happy to help figure out which Lazarus Crawford you're looking for.

Don't know if this belongs here or not.  I have a great-grand-mother whose name was spelled "Crofferd".  She's pretty much of a mystery,  know only she was born 30 May 1830 in Knox County, TN, m. Sep 1854, and died 1867.  Her mother's name - Susannah--may have found them both on the 1850 census under the name "Crawford".
by Terri Jerkes G2G6 Mach 2 (22.5k points)

Hi Terri!  Thanks for reaching out smiley  This is a common thing with surnames.  Census takers often spelled names phonetically if they weren't sure of the spelling.  Other times, the transcriptionist can't read the entry clearly and it results in a misspelled name.  I'm happy to add you to the study to see if we can get to the bottom of your mystery!

Wow!  You're into the tough stuff now.  There aren't many records for this time period although there are a few.  Thanks for sharing.  I'll add a tag to the profile for the name study for you.

My grandmother was a Crawford. Her great-grandfather, Henry Crawford, is one of my "brick walls". Henry was probably born in PA (or perhaps in NY) in 1822; he lived in Lycoming and Tioga Counties in PA; moved his family to Linn County, Iowa before 1870; dying there in 1875. His son, Charles R Crawford, was born in Tioga Co. PA in 1851 and died in Linn Co. IA in 1902. I'd love to contribute what I have and would really appreciate using your name study as a resource to help me break down that brick wall!

I"d be happy to collaborate on my wife's Crawford line.  Her grandfather, William, was born in the Nebraska territory before it became a state and there are no birth records for him.  His mother died soon after he was born and the family is not completely sure what her name was, but they think her first name was Carrie.  Her great grandfather, also William, immigrated to America but no one knows for sure when or at which port he arrived.  This genealogy stuff would be a lot easier if there were fewer people named William Crawford.
by Erik Oosterwal G2G6 Mach 5 (53.7k points)
That made me laugh out loud.  In my family it is John, William and David that repeat every generation.  At least in my generation they started using them as middle names.  Welcome aboard!

Hi, my Crawford ancestors are all in County Antrim, Ireland. I’m sure we crossed from Scotland way back but I have no paper trail for that.
by J Alexander G2G6 (8.0k points)

Welcome!  Maybe the name study will help you find that paper trail smiley  I'll add you to the list.  Thank you

Sounds interesting! My great great great grandfather was Alexander Crawford 1811-?? who married Annie Findley 1825-??. They were from Scotland, and they immigrated to Ontario, Canada. I don't know when or where they died, but there daughter was born in Ontario.

This couple has been a my brick wall for ages!

Hi Alex!  Welcome smiley  My Crawford line came from Scotland to Ontario as well.  My Brick Wall is in Scotland, but already the name study has helped me find other connections.  Maybe we'll be able to break your brick wall too!  I'll add you to the list!

I have already joined the Crawford study. While researching my husband’s geneology, I found many Crawford’s, starting with Jenet Crawford who lived from 1715 until 1770. Going backward, I found a direct line, leading back to Leofwine de Mercia de Crawford who was born in 946 and died in 1028. I have not researched past the direct line.

I am not certified before the 1700s (1600s?). If you would like, I can send you the names and dates in the direct line. I have sources for about half of them.

Found about 100 registrations of Crawfords in the Netherlands in OpenArchives (genealogical data of Dutch and Belgian archives). From a Adam Crawford who married in 1587 in Amsterdam (cannot read the terrible handwriting)  to the burial of Lional Crawford in 2008

That's incredible!  In all the years I've been researching the Crawford name, I was not aware of any in the Netherlands.  Thank you so much for sharing!

I am NOT a Crawford, but my wife is. Her line is mostly in MD and VA (Rockingham County). I can trace her to Joshua M. Crawford (Born in Port Deposit, VA in 1833 and died in Carroll Co, MD in 1881). His father was Zachariah Crawford (b. 1794/5 in Rockingham Co). and I have a single record listing Marshall & Susannah Crawford as his parents. Problem is, I can't find a Marshall in the area and time. I find a Martin and Susannah, but that's not what the document says. So I'm stuck. Happy to help if I can. I live in North East, MD.
by Paul Rickert G2G Crew (530 points)
Hi Paul!  Welcome to the Crawford name study.  It is important to remember that spelling is not always consistent and should be looked at, even if you think they may not be the same people.  In my husbands line, it is very common to find alternate spellings such as Lena/Lina or Esaba/Isabel.  Good Luck!  I will PM you with the study info shortly.

I have recently started uploading my ancestry to Wikitree. Happily, someone has the same line and most of my tree is already up there. However, I am happy to help anyway I can. I live in Scotland. So can perhaps answer any geographical queries people might have.

My grandfather was Joseph Frank Crawford, born 1879, probably in Ashland, Kentucky. He was murdered in a gas station holdup in Chicago in 1952, where he was working the night shift. I don't know anything about that side of my family beyond that, but would love to fill in the blanks.
