I've run into a blank wall on John Armstrong born 1751 in Scotland

I can't seem to find any information for John Armstrong Armstrong-11830 and his past family.  I have most of his descendants but his ancestors are eluding me.

I know he was born in Scotland 1751 and died 1811 but there doesn't appear to be anything on his parents or siblings.

Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

Your help would be greatly appreciated

This is a possibility:

Bridegroom ARMSTRONG JOHN
Bride KATHARINE RUSSEL
/FR1230 (FR1230)
Date 23/09/1749
ref 821/  50 16
Place Dumfries
Thank you!

I don't know why it's so difficult to find the Armstrong people of Scotland.
It has to be considered that a date of January on the index might actually be a date from the previous year.  Or, like my ancestor's brothers (at least two of them), there might be a couple of years between birth and baptism (and the majority of the index dates are the baptismal dates).
Actually, this is from the old Parish records so the date is most likely accurate. Yes, usually it is the baptism date given and not the birth date. In that era baptisms were invariably held in a week or less but, as you noted, there are exceptions. There's only one way to find out for sure - but I'm too cheap, :)

.

This one is from almost 100 years earlier than my 2X great-grandfather, so has only the one date.  It says "Baptisms", so he may have been born in 1751, but churched in 1752 (the date showing).

My 2Xgreat and his brother were born 4 years apart, but churched the same day.

Robert (born 13 Jan 1845; bap 19 June 1849)

Samuel (born 3 Jan 1849; bap 19 Jun 1849)

.

That's why I always look either side of a presumed date.  :)

Interestingly, there were 3 baptisms at Dumfries on 27 January 1751. John Maxwell, John Armstrong, and Thomas Johnson - 6, 6, and 7 days old. The respective fathers were witnesses for each other.

I can see the 27/01/1751 one ... but Find My Past gives  a total twelve “John Armstrong” baptisms in Dumfriesshire, Scotland between 1746 and 1756?  Quite common a name.  Guess if mother and father unknown then birth date is approximate.

Good luck ;-)

They seem to be so elusive before 1751
Why I've pretty much given h up trying to sort the many John Armstrongs

John Armstrong 27/01/1751 appears to have two possible siblings.

James Armstrong 4/08/1752 821/  20  206

Jean Armstrong 3/10/1754  821/  20  230

No mother is named but the father is a tradesman joiner.

Matching parents (and going by the information on the associated profiles), I think your best bet is a 1752 registration.  I can't view the actual document at this point because I used my last credits with SP yesterday to confirm details about a profile I adopted.  (Need to check how many more I will be looking at before buying more credits, especially as it's now a weekend and I cannot use my bank card.)

Gah, I tried to post the info, but it formatted strangely.  I'll make it a pdf and upload that instead.

The listed mother for the siblings (going by the data on the profiles) is Elizabeth, not Elspeth (as per the profiles), but matching Elspeth with John Armstrong for a child John gave me the 1752 registration I mentioned.

Attaching a link to the pdf file. (removed - information added below (somewhere))

If I up my credits with SP, I don't have a problem actually checking the register page for you.

Edited to add:

Yes she also went by a Elizabeth. I found an old family tree and I am going by it only because I know it’s been verified by the people who are looking after the tree

Is that info what you need?  I can take a view of the register if you'd like.

The PDF you sent is correct according to the family tree I have.

There are so many John Armstrongs it's difficult to keep them all straight
The parish name matched the death place, even if all the others were elsewhere.

Going to take a look at the register page for you.

Sending you a PM with the pdf of the register page.

No worries.  Happy to do it.  :)

(For future readers, the basic information from the linked pdf has been added to the several of my posts (due to character limits it wouldn't all fit in the one).  The pdf is being removed due to copyright concerns.)
