How can I add a family member (ancestor) from a GEDCOM?

I've uploaded a GEDCOM. Some of my family members match existing WikiTree profiles, but others do not. Create profiles for my ancestors that do not match existing WikiTree profiles.

You might want to take a look at this page as it has some tips, hints and links to WikiTree Help pages to assist you in transitioning your GEDCOM file to WikiTree. Especially useful for the newer user of GEDCOMpare.

GEDCOM File Usage Primer

This should answer your question and possibly some you haven't thought of yet when you start using GEDCOMpare.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to compare a lot of names and add them to my family. Unfortunately there were a lot of names that are unmatched. I have a lot of information on these people and would like to include them. There does not seem to be any way of adding an unmatched individual from a GEDCOM. Is this correct?

Thanks,

John
Once you have gone through all of the Suggested Matches and either Accepted or Rejected the match, the names without a Suggested Match should have an ADD button appear at the right hand side of the name row so you can import them into new WikiTree Profiles.

If the ADD button has not appeared this usually means there are some still unreconciled Suggested Matches.  All must be taken care of.  If there are any Suggested Matches still showing up on your list, the ADD button will not appear.  Even if you Accepted a Match, if there are other Suggestions on the name row or if you manually marked the completed box on a name row and there is a Suggested Match there, it must be resolved Computers are quite relentless when following a program.  LOL

Let me know if this is the problem John.

Oops, almost forgot.  Make sure the green Hide/Show Completed Rows button says Hide Completed Rows.  This means all completed rows will appear in the list.  Sometimes the Suggested Match is hidden and it drives you nuts trying to find it.

And do NOT hit the Refresh button on the bottom of the page as this just adds more Suggested Matches and more work.  I really find this button a bit of make work as when you finally get the Add button and hit it, WikiTree runs another quick search and if a close name you have not all ready Rejected is found, it will appear on the page just like when you ADD a name manually.

Thanks LJ,

You were a big help. I persisted and managed to add family members. There were some people named Smith and Evans, so there were may rejects for each match. I guess it the algorithm to maximize the number of profiles. Also I encountered a few potential matches with private family trees. Some looked vaguely promising but had to few details to be certain so they got rejected too.

John
Smith and Evans.  Oh yeah John, you had fun, ;)

I have Smith, Johnson, Williams, Richards, Jones in my tree.  I had to learn how to use GEDCOMpare.  LOL

Common names is one of the reasons it is always better to load a smaller GEDCOM file....to keep your sanity.  Glad you made it through and good choice on skipping those you're not sure of.  There is always tomorrow.
