35% French DNA. Want to find out

+1 vote
Had a DNA test and said that I'm 35% French. I know I have connections with Europe since one of my ancestors was born in Italy. I have no idea how to go about looking for hints on my European background . Relatives are passed away and when I start researching I always hit a wall. Suggestions please

If you haven't found anything on WikiTree, the next place to look is FamilySearch.org (free). National Census records are also a great place to look. There may be genealogy groups in the area of interest.

Since some of these records are withheld for a lifetime, its best to start with a deceased ancestor. The further back you can go in recent time, say a great great grand-parent, the more likely you are to find a record.

Be forewarned. The research takes alot more time than most of us ever would have imagined.

Also, DNA testing for ancestry is but one source. It can provide hints, but should not be considered a definite source without direct comparison.

Peter, you said, “Be forewarned. The research takes alot more time than most of us ever would have imagined.”

Ain’t it the truth!

Is it with 23andme or Ancestry ?

Many Puerto Ricans have French roots.

I did it with ancestry. Most people tell me that I don't look Puerto Rican, so now I can say I Frentexarican.

Like I said, most of my relatives are gone. I have an account on family search and have gone back to a few generations on my grandfather's side but once I get to my grandmother's Italian side, I can't get much else. :(
GEDmatch is a possibility.  I have used it myself, so I can't recommend it. Others may be able to provide a review.
