Can anyone help with the mystery of Volney Dyer?

My 4x Great Grandfather, Volney Dyer, was born in 1810 in Albany New York to unknown parents and did not resurface again until his marriage to Charlotte Finney in 1849 in Indiana.  Then there is no mention of him until his death in 1879.  He does not show up in any census, Charlotte and their children are either living with her parents or on their own.  But he dies in their family home and is described in his obituary as a loving husband and father. Does anyone have any insights on where this mystery man could have been for so many years?

Reading his obituary perhaps he was in care somewhere, as he seems to have been an invalid for many years.
Mystery solved with DNA.  "Volney Dyer" was the alias used by Varnam Dyer Burch in his bigamist marriage to Charlotte Finney.  He also had a family in Keokuk, Iowa, which explains his absences.
