Source question - Add BMD info for child to parent's profile?

Good morning!

I have a question regarding birth, marriage, and death records that list names of parents.  I have been including these in the sources for the child's profile, for obvious reasons.

Should I also be including the record for the child in the sources for the parents?  Or is having the source naming the parents in the child's profile sufficient?

Thanks!

I usually include on a parent's profile any of a child's birth/baptismal, marriage, death/burial records that mention the parent. I view such records as sources for the relationship between the parent/child, so include on both profiles. There may be other valuable pieces of information about the parent included on such a record that can or should be documented in the parent's profile:

  • The record may include a name variant for the parent that should be documented. And for a mother, it may even include her maiden/birth surname, which can be beneficial if no other source of that information has been found yet.
  • The record may indicate if the parent is deceased at the time, which can be beneficial if no other known death information has been found yet for the parent. I've even found a marriage record that included a death date for one of the parents of the bride/groom.
  • The record may indicate if a parent is widowed at the time, which can be beneficial if no other known death information has been found yet for the spouse.
  • The record may include where the parent is from (birth/residence location), which can be beneficial if no other place of birth/residence has been found yet.
  • The record could indicate a parent's occupation.
  • A birth/baptismal record can also provide a hint for searching for a marriage record for the parent if no other marriage info has been found yet.
  • The record could include other valuable information about the parent.

Thank you, Rick!  Very helpful!
And additional to that - Wikitree-specific: If you can source an Unsourced Profile with a BMD-record of the child, it also counts in the Sourcerer's Challenge, as there is a button: "Provides sourced evidence of relationship". I often do that when I source profiles.
Thanks, Jelena - that is a good point, too!
