The Russian Roots Project is a sub-project of the Slavic Roots Project.  If you have a Russian ancestors, an interest in Russia, or if you speak Russian, we would love to have you on board.

There are a lot of initiatives that need work including expanding the profile base of Russian notables by marking them with the project template and also marking other Russian profiles with a Russian sticker.  In addition, there are Russian notable profiles that need biography development, connecting, and refinement.  If you have Russian ancestors or you want to help with project tasks, please join us!

To join the Russian Roots Project, please add an answer to this post.

If you are already a member of the Project, please leave a comment and let us know you're still active.

After answering this post, you can also add your name to the Russian Project member's page and list what you're working on.  You can also add this category to your profile page: [[Category:Russian Roots Project Members]].

Thank you for your attention and we look forward to seeing you.

Can you tell me what the difference is between

Russian Roots

Slavic Roots

Which should I apply for Lithuanian ancestors from before 1918, when it was still grand Duchy of Lithuania and not a republic?

Hi Sharon, the parent project is Slavic Roots and this incorportes countries that are predominantly or partially of Slavic language, ethnicity, and heritage including: the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovakia, Bulgria, Belorussia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Croatia, Russia, Serbia, and Poland.

While not Slavic per se, the Baltic States (Lithunia, Latvia, and Estonia) have large Russian minority populations as does Kazakhstan.  As these countries were part of the Soviet Union, membership to the Slavic Roots Project would be warranted and may be useful.

From 1795-1918, Lithuania was indeed a Grand-Duchy, but part of the Russian Empire.  I would think you should apply to the Russia Project.

To note: membership in any of the sub-projects automatically enters you in the Slavic Roots project as the badge is the same for all:

I am interested in both the Russian roots as I have ancestors who migrated from Germany to the Ukraine. I also have Slavic roots and would love to see the where the paths cross.

There are a bunch of Russian notables who don't yet have WikiTree profiles listed on the Notable People in Need of a WikiTree Profile page.

There is also a section listing unconnected branches with a connection to Russia on the Let others know what locations you are working on page.

Thanks Greg, something to add to the list.  Now we just need a few volunteers ;-)
I do agree with Greg about the Russian Roots because I’m part Russian on Both sides of the family but I don’t know what part of Russia my ancestors were from. All I know is they are from Russia and immigrated into the United States in the 1890’s.

Slavic roots is a more general project than Russian roots. My ancestors are from Russia, but more distant ancestors from other Slavic countries.

Hey There,

I'm interested in joining this project. I only recently discovered my biological paternal ancestry and it happens to be Eastern European and Russian. I've been struggling to find genealogical records pre-immigration for my ancestors who migrated from Russia. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (especially when tackling the challenges of transliteration).
by Dustin Berg G2G Crew (750 points)
Hi Dustin and welcome.  Thank you for your service.  I'd love to chat one day over a beer about your service in Afghanistan, maybe we've seen some of the same places.

I've added the project badge and added some project information to your profile notes.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Russian records are notoriously hard to come by.  The communists were replacing not only a political system but also a religious and social system.  To completely erase the ties to the past they destroyed all of the old records, blew up the churches, and killed off a lot of the population.  Those who survived often burned their own records for fear of being sent away to die.

I recommend that you fully develop your tree as much as possible and then pick one ancestor or their immediate family to work on and then look for records for them.  We can help you to look for records for a person or family but only give general search advice for the whole tree.

We're looking forward to your contributions.

Hello! I have some ancestors who emigrated as German settlers from the Electoral Palatinate to Volhynia and Galicia and some went on from there to Bessarabia and Bukovina. There are also Volga Germans and settlers who resided in former Polish territories, which were then annexed by the Soviet Union with the Hitler-Stalin Pact. Many were deported to Siberia or the Kazakh steppes during the First World War and afterwards, or fell victim to Stalinist terror. Those who were able, emigrated to America (USA and Canada). Others resettled in the Warthegau in today's Poland and fled to Germany at the end of the war.

Hi,

I am currently going through some of the medieval Russian profiles for The Medieval Project as I am pre 1500 certified and can speak Russian, albeit a little rusty now. I’m happy to help. I notice that some LNABs are incorrect certainly on the medieval  Рюрикович  family..

Hi Ann,

Thanks for your email and welcome to the project.  We don't have too many Russian speakers so you may consider helping to transcribe docs.  We're looking forward to your contributions.  I've added the project badge to your profile and some notes in your comments.

And don't forget to join the Google Group here:

Do Germans from Russia count? Do Jewish ancestors from the former Russian empire (i.e. Poland and Belarus) count, too?
by Jennifer Nani G2G6 (7.8k points)

Definitely as Russia encompasses a wide geography. We also have a Jewish Roots project.
