Parents of Ira Taylor

+3 votes
Today Ancestry identified Samuel Taylor (1745-1820) and Tirzah Holcomb (1753-1851) as potential parents for Ira Taylor.  The only thing I know about Ira Taylor is on Find a Grave, which mentions his father's house but not his father's name, and says that Ira is cousins with Henry Taylor. I have not been able to find anything to corroborate this, although it seems plausible given the occurrences of "Tirzah" on my tree in that period.  If anyone can corroborate this, I'd appreciate it,

Scott, I'm poking around. First thing I noticed is his death record is in Montague and not Amherst. I think this is probably correct as the nearest census, 1860, also shows him in Montague.

Death 1862
Location Montague, Franklin, Massachusetts, United States
Original Text
Amended N
Volume Name 156

Massachusetts: Vital Records, 1841-1910. (From original records held by the Massachusetts Archives. Online database:, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2004.)

P.S. I notice the grave marker is also said to be in Montague.

Here's the origin of the text found on Find-a-Grave:   Pressley, Edward Pearson "History of Montague: a typical Puritan town" published 1910. The text is a recollection of Miss Louisa Rowe in 1895. It will take some work but I think with that information you may be able to dig up a property map of the period and perhaps use that to identify the father keeping in mind she said, "I think it was Ira Taylor's father..." Or, see how many Taylor families are there at the right time period.

From the information at hand, I would not be certain he is born in Montague. His original death record in Montague clearly states the parents are unknown and if he had been born there I think they would have been known even though he was 81 years of age.

Info Ancestry is giving me that I can't verify yet:

Samuel Taylor
26 Nov 1745 • Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA
1 Jul 1820 • Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA
Tirzah Holcomb
13 Dec 1753 • Westfield, Massachusetts
2 Jan 1851 • Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA
It looks like three Tirzahs need merging, meaning more Samuel Taylor mergings, as well.
All right, the speculated parents are now in as Taylor-11227 and Holcomb-494, but I am looking for more information to make the connection to Ira.
Scott, do you have membership? I'd check for records there on all of the upstream people as the sourcing on many of the profiles I looked at briefly is a little dated...would be good to see if NEHGR or similar has researched/looked at any of the involved families in the last few decades just to make sure some sketchy (as in written for $) late 19th century genealogy isn't involved anywhere. Looks like you are narrowing in on things. Have you seen if there is a town historian who would have a lot ownership map for the period?
No, so far I haven't paid to do anything related to genealogy yet.  I've gotten so far without doing so.
One thing I need to do is find the Samuel Taylor that was marked as the husband of the elder Tirzah Holcomb of the same parents who died in infancy, but now that I've deleted the relationship, I don't know how to find the profile, since obviously that's an error since it's the husband of the younger Tirzah who lived long enough to be married.
