Military Stickers are often far too complex to use. [closed]

I've been doing this for a very long time now. If I have this much trouble with the templates for military, what kinds of problems are others having? Today I am trying to put a template for Civil War USA service on a relative. Many different permutations and combinations have been tried. I've read the Wikipedia article on the 105th Regiment, New York Infantry that fought at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run and I can not find anything else to put in the darned template that works. I don't know the man's rank, but that doesn't matter. It never has before. I used the New York Civil War Flag because a regiment flag was not available. I've also done that before; so, with the application of logical deduction, it would seem that the "regiment name" and the "unit" sections are the problems. Can someone please tell me what it should be? Again, I've tried many different ways and it all comes up red. The Nickname for the Regiment is "Rochester Regiment" according to the "List of New York Civil War Units" in Wikipedia. That doesn't work in either spot. This does not seem like a viable template if it is so complex. One should not have to be an expert in the Civil War to attach a template.

I share many of the same frustrations with the military stickers. I have to keep track of the ones that have worked the best and then copy and paste them to other profiles as needed hoping that the modifications I need to make work. For me, the "how to" on most of them tends to be irritatingly complex when I think a short bullet point precis would suffice for most of us.
I hate the way the stickers look, so I don't use them.  They're horrible.

All fixed Darlene. This what it looks like.

{{US Civil War
|side = USA
|enlisted = Feb 25, 1862
|mustered = Oct 18, 1862
|regiment flag = Civil_War_Flags-6.png
|regiment name = 105th Regiment, New York Infantry
|rank =
|unit = 105th Regiment, New York Infantry
}}

One problem was no space between US and Civil.  Computers are persnickity and it wanted that space.

And you had the 105th Regiment, New York Infantry in the unit= field with out a comma.  The regiments name = field is a free space and you can write whatever you want there.  The unit= field refers to the category and must perfect or it doesn't work and you get it in red.

They can be a little frustrating, but once you do a few, it isn't so bad.  Took me awhile too.

Was it you who fixed the War of 1812 sticker, LJ? I couldn't find the thread. Thanks again for helping out on these.
Thank you LJ. Missed the space completely in my frustration!  I had tried the 105th in both the Regiment and Unit fields and it didn't take, but it could have also been that darned pesky space!!  Why call it "regiment name" if you don't want the regiment name?  That doesn't seem like a free space. It asks for Regiment name. The "Unit" field now has the Regiment name. Weird. Can't we find a better way of asking for what the template wants there? Anyway, thank you again for the fix. It's still a very pesky template!

Yep, thought I recognized that 1812 sticker. LOL

That's what we're supposed to do, help each other when we get into a slight jam or even jelly for that matter. :)

One little hint here for Military Stickers.  Category:Military History

Here is the Parent category for almost all things needed for military stickers or at least the military units ancestors may have served in if in the military during peace time. Just pick your country and start drilling down till you get want you want  Or at least a dang close facsimile. Really, if you can't find what you need sometimes I look at Profiles associated with categories to see what they have through the Edit Tab and copy that to my Profile and work with it till I get it right.  Practice makes perfect.

Thanks for the Star Darlene, a pleasure to help.

And I don't understand either why in the Civil War sticker it is called regiments name= and in other stickers, WW1, WW2, Korea, it is named units =?  Possibly a problem differentiating between the fields units= and unit=.  That threw me off till I got better glasses.  Of course, almost every unit in the civil war was a regiment so....

Well, ours is not reason why as the poem goes.
My only suggestion to add to this deals specifically with the 105th Ohio.  Please use this flag for their regimental flag:

regiment flag = 105th_Regiment_Ohio_Infantry_United_States_Civil_War_Resource_Page-6.jpg

I agree, Darlene. I had the same problem with the Canadian War of 1812 sticker. Another member came up with this solution. I don't know whether it will help you, but it may help someone with a War of 1812 sticker!

{{War of 1812
| country = Canada
| branch= Canadian Militia
| startdate = 6 Jul 1813
| units = Captain Samuel Hatt’s Co, 5th Regiment of Lincoln Militia
| enddate = 24 Jul 1813
| unit = 5th Regiment of Lincoln Militia, Canada
| rank = Pvt.}}

Only thing I would do differently is change Pvt. to private as abbreviations are not encouraged.
Good to know. Thanks!
