Herbert Ercliff Lay (1888-1938) was my grandfather. James Berry Lay,  father of Herbert, has been near impossible to find. Janes married 3 times in Jefferson County, Alabama. One wife was Eva Cobbourn(e) who I am fairly certain is Herbert’s Mother. Any help is appreciated.

I have found Herbert in the 1900 Jefferson census with mother Eva Jackson, born Georgia, age 29, divorced, and a brother Maurice born 1890.  The father is shown as born in Mississippi. I will research further if you don't mind.
