Trying to identify who Isaac and Clara (Taylor) Appleyard's 9 children were (Yorkshire: c.1890s - 1911)

Hi,

I am trying to find out the names of Isaac and Clara (Taylor) Appleyard's 9 children.

  • Isaac Appleyard and Clara Taylor married in November of 1893 in Leeds, in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
  • Isaac died in 1909 in Leeds.
  • And the 1911 census shows Clara (and presumably Isaac) had 9 children - 5 living in 1911 and 4 who had died). I know the names of five children as they are on the 1901 and 1911 census.

The known children are:

  1. Ada (1894: Leeds) - Thanks Anon. and Gillian
  2. James (1896: Leeds) - Thanks Anon. and Gillian
  3. Arthur (1900: Leeds)
  4. Clara (1902: Leeds)
  5. Frank (1904: Leeds)
  6. Harry (1906: Leeds)
  7. Lily Jemima (1908: Leeds)

There are four unknown children. If anyone can help identify them it would be fantastic.

P.S. There appears to be another Appleyard x Taylor family in Leeds in the 1880/90s so I was unable to just assume based on surnames.

I have checked on Ancestry for baptism records with father Isaac Appleyard and mother Clara. The following are all from the collection "West Yorkshire, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1910" and there are exactly 9 matches, so these would seem to be all their children:

Name Ada Appleyard
Baptism 28/11/1894 Leeds, Sheepscar, St Clement Yorkshire England

Name Henry Appleyard
Baptism 28/11/1894 Leeds, Sheepscar, St Clement Yorkshire England

Name James Appleyard
Birth 13/01/1896
Baptism 06/04/1898 Leeds, St John the Baptist Yorkshire England

Name Louisa Appleyard
Birth 10/03/1898

Name Arthur Appleyard
Birth 19/03/1900
Baptism 11/04/1900 Leeds, St John the Baptist Yorkshire England

Name Clara Appleyard

Thank you so much Paul - that information is fantastic, and it’s great to see possible twins since they run in the family but also slightly surprising the four eldest all died young

James and Louisa may both have died from the same cause, as they were both buried on the same day (17 June 1899 at Beckett Street Cemetery, Leeds, James aged 3 years and Louisa aged 15 months) - see https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/15461099?h=bfa08b (which hopefully you can see even if you don't have an Ancestry account)

Ada was buried in the same cemetery on 16 February 1895 aged 11 months - see https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/15461147?h=6bd14b

I can't find a burial record for Henry.

For a bit of background on what Leeds was like at that time you might like to look at https://chrisnickson.co.uk/leeds-background-materials/, which I thought looked quite interesting and maybe helps to explain the young deaths.

On the assumption that your family are Leeds registrations rather than Hunslet, then there are only two further registrations;

Ada 1894

James 1896

On the 1911 census, Clara says she has had 9 children, 5 alive and four who are deceased.
Thank you

Their son Arthur lived in Hunslet himself during the 20s so it's not an unfamiliar area to me.

In 1893 Isaac and Clara married in Sheepscar, and Isaac lived at 6 holyroyd street in sheepscar, and clara lived at 1 firth place possibly in sheepscar.

In 1901 the family lived at 38 Recovery Street in Newtown, North Leeds, and in 1911 they lived at 52 Lincolnfield Terrace also in North Leeds, and in 1924 they were probably living at 18 Westbourne Avenue in Hunslet, Leeds.

The two I can see are

Ada Appleyard,  b 1894 Q2 Leeds, d 1895 Q1.

James Appleyard, b 1896 Q1 Leeds, d 1899 Q2.

Maybe the other two were unregistered stillbirths, or maybe spelt/transcribed differently so haven't come up in searches.

Thank you,

I think the main problem for me is if they belong to this Appleyard/Taylor family or the other
Both those registered as died pre-1900.
Sorry, I should maybe have made it clearer that they were the only two with MMN Taylor. I did give the death registration years and quarters, Martin.
