This is the First Christian Church in Lincoln, Kansas. The building was built in 1906 by my grandfather and his brother George, who were training under their sister's husband, Henry Secrist, who was a building contractor. They were also all members of the church. My grandfather, Peter Stoner, is seated in the bottom row, 3rd from the right. There are a number of my other family members present here, also, and a lot of church members which I don't know. I believe that the church is still standing.

My wife's geat-grandmother, Emily Jane Carey. Her names were passed down to several family members, including my wife's sister, Emily, and my wife who has Jane as a middle name.

This is a photo of my great-grandmother (my father's paternal grandmother), Ann Chandler Dodge with her five daughters (my great-aunts), Ida, twins Eda and Eva, Ethel, and Florence all dressed up. I believe this photo was taken around 1900 in Nebraska.

Susan, that was originally intended as an Answer. I had typed my Answer and copied and pasted in what should have been a link to the image (which is already on a profile). Once added, however, the Answer included only the string and not the image itself. Since you can't delete an Answer, I converted it to a Comment and changed the text to what you see above, intending to find out what I was doing wrong. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out.

This picture was taken in Santa Rosa, California about 1939.  The baby being held on the left is my mom (grandpa holding her).  Next to grandpa is my grandma and the little boy in front is my uncle.  Also included in the photo are my great grandparents and grand aunts and uncles.

My great-grandparents, Free and Lydia (Wamsley) Hubbard, with 6 of their 9 children (one died in infancy). Their ninth child, my paternal grandmother, was born 7 years after this photo was taken.

I have pictures of Uncle Ed in his blue field uniform but these whites are his "dress uniform," certainly what he wore on Sunday.

Hi Robin, this is the brother of my Great-Grandmother.  The entire family migrated from Sweden to the United States in the early 1890's.

Great-Great Uncle Anton Edward Helgren joined the Army in Minnesota and got to "see the world" from the family stories I've heard.  I found him in the 1900 census in Manila, Philippines on an Army base.  This was during the time of the Philippine-American war.  

I found war service records for him in the Philippines and see that his rank was sergeant.  Here he is in his blue service uniform when he was a corporal:

I found his grave in California and see that he was  promoted as high as Sergeant Major before he retired from the Army.

My mother has photos of my great-grandmother and all of her siblings, including Uncle Ed in a beautiful turn-of-the-century wooden frame:

I opened the back and took the photos out and sure enough, Uncle Ed's dress white uniform photo was taken in the Philippines - perhaps he mailed this photo home as a Christmas gift to his parents.

I noticed that all his pupils were boys. Wonder if they separated the boys from the girls for Sunday School. I also love how the boys are dressed. Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo.

I was born in Santa Barbara. Just out of curiosity, do you know which church? My grandfather taught at Westmont College, there, after he retired from Pasadena City College. That would have been in the 1950's.

My cousin says that it is possibly the First Methodist Church.  I think it would be so cool if people recognized some of the boys as their relatives!

My great grandparents on the left, and my great grandmother's sister and her husband in the middle.  I don't know who the couple on the right is.  I think this was around the mid 1910s.

52 Photos Week 4 Sunday Best

I selected my husband's 4th cousins Clyde & Horace Greenawalt for this week.

Clyde was killed while piloting a Taylorcraft two-passenger airplane with his brother-in-law as a passenger. He was 34 years old. He took off from a hay field with hay on the tail of the plane. The hay caught fire. The plane took a dive from 90 feet, hit the ground, bounced and hit the ground again and tilted trapping Clyde in. He was burnt to death. His brother-in-law was thrown from the plane, but had extreme burns.

I think that is why I love this picture so much.

This picture of my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Louise Cass, was taken around 1910.  My grandfather looked a great deal like her in his own childhood photos.

My great grandparents' household in Vermont in about 1902, in clothing that has to have been their Sunday best, particularly for the children. I especially enjoy the big bows on the little boys (my grandfather and his brother). My great grandfather was a minister, so his "Sunday best" might have been his preaching clothes.

This is my maternal grandmother, Viola, when she was 7 years old.  It was taken in 1917 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

This is my Nana Percy (AKA Pearl Mardell Purcell).  As I have gotten older I have been told that I favor her in looks and temperment. I can totally live with that.  

She loved all things Pink (which I did NOT inherit) and Garfield (the cat, which is totally my fault because I gave her the first stuffed one when I wsa 7)

Here is a picture of My Great aunt Millicent that was taken at the same time as the one of Percy.  Millie was a year and a half older than Nana Percy

I decided to use the picture I have of a group of the Old Contempables survivors and hounoured veterans from WWWI My grandfather is in the back row second from the left. George Percy Locker is also in the back row second from the right.
