We have here our John (Rhodes) Rodes I (1630 - abt. 1701)  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rhodes-2091 who is married to an Elizabeth Jessop https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jessop-10

On Family Search and Geni there are profiles for John Rhodes with parents listed as Francis Rhodes and Elizabeth Lascelles.  Though I think they may the parents of a different John Rhodes, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rhodes-5357 and that on Family Search that two John Rhodes have been added as their sons and that on Geni that perhaps the wrong parents were added but he has the correct children, except not sure on son Charles.

Anyways, the parents may be correct after all, who knows.  But it looks like this question does need a bit of research to sort things straight.

There is also this website, http://www.rhodesfamily.org/girard_de_rodes.php that lists a John Rodes b: 1614 and has a son Charles listed.  Not sure exactly how it all matches up.

Erik,

Not being able to verify any of the England info on the profile, I looked a bit wider. Burke (click and see page pg 449) provided the info is correct has John born in Sturton, Nottingham (not Derby) and the son of Clifton Rhodes and his second wife Elizabeth Scrimshire of Cottgrave, Notts. He has John married to "Elizabeth, daughter of Simon Jessop, Esq. of Colton, in Staffordshire, and had...."

Among offspring he lists John married Mary dau of William Tigh of London who had children Francis and Charles who went to America. And a dau Anne who married a Mr Harrison.

The info on the children seems incomplete if this is the same John Rhodes and Elizabeth Jessop. The location not being Derby may be why records have been so hard to find. Started looking in Nottingham and found a number of records that could pertain but haven't checked any of them thoroughly.

I have been interested in this line for a long time.  According to what I have found:

Francis Rhodes and Elizabeth Lascelles had a son, John, who married Elizabeth Jessup.  They had a son, John, who married Hannah Wilcox.  They had a son, John III, who married Jane Van Swearingen.  It is confusing to research this, but I have seen this line a few different places.  One source was a book found at:

https://books.google.com/books?id=Bq5cDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA89&lpg=PA89&dq=john+rhodes+and+jane+van+swearingen&source=bl&ots=wi8VUyHs_Y&sig=bYPFClhHZv6AKgEgLjJJgPEWM9U&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjwgdCJ_6ffAhVk04MKHZgNDPgQ6AEwDXoECAEQAQ#v=onepage&q=john%20rhodes%20and%20jane%20van%20swearingen&f=false

Barnabas Rhodes, son of John II, purchased land in Berks County, as did a John Rhodes who I presume to be John III.  Nearby both their properties resides Richard Gregory.  John Rhodes III married Richard's daughter, Judith, and they relocated to Northampton County, now Carbon.  Living next door to them in Northampton is his sister, Mary Rhodes, married to George Custer (Custard).  John III's son, Joseph, had children Judith and Barnabas, among others. John's family was involved with the Moravian Church.  (From PA Archives land warrant registers, will of Richard Gregory, and various cemetery records).

His wife Elizabeth Jessop is a distant cousin so I look at this line from time to time. The sourcing on Rhodes-2091 is murky with little primary source documentation. The first statement is from a source not acceptable to the pre-1700 profiles. The Smedley information isn't sourced (except those items clearly from Quaker MM records) and sadly the link to his original site no longer functions (need to check Wayback Machine). In a quick search I did not find bona fide baptismal records for John Rhodes 1628-1632 this location but this was not an exhaustive search. Also did not find a marriage record for listed date and location although it could be in pre-Quaker non-conformist records (did not yet check that). I think the basic sourcing on John would benefit from being corroborated with primary documentation to firmly establish dates and locations before searching for the parents. The issues at Family Search, Geni, Ancestry, etc. appear to stem from not having established facts before looking further back.

Happy to pitch in on this if you want to decide who will look for what.

Hello all,

Yes please feel free to pitch in and help research this couple.

I think it is one of those cases where some of the information is probably right, but it definitely requires some more research to straighten it all out.

Good luck!

Here's three sources for Charles Rhoads of VA:
