Why isn't the reason box for Merge, Match, Reject showing up?

I love that we added a reason box for merging, matching and rejecting, but it doesn't show up after I initiate any of these IF I have first compared the two profiles. Why not? Thanks.

Hi Jillaine,

The comment for explaining a merge proposal should always appear when proposing a merge. When creating an unmerged match or a rejected match, it only shows up if you're matching or rejecting a merge that was proposed.

That is, if someone thought two profiles were duplicates and proposed that they be merged, and you are deferring or rejecting that merge, you are asked to explain your decision. If you are proactively going through suggested matches or a list of names, you're not asked to explain it. The assumption is that creating history items and comment postings for these would just add noise. If in certain situations it wouldn't, you could always post on the bulletin board with an extra click.

We could look at adjusting this policy down the road if that's what people would prefer.

Interesting. My expectation would be for consistent application of the comment feature no matter where you are doing the merge/match/reject from. Ie whether you're initiating or responding, there should be a place to explain.

that said I can see the reason to exclude comments from gedmatching. That would be a lot of noise!
With rejecting matches, we don't even record a history item.

We did that initially, but people's Activity Feeds ended up crowded with lines that said "Jillaine rejected a match of X and Y" etc. Lots of these are for matches that were suggested by the system but no human would reasonably think they were duplicates.

I feel we need to be careful not to crowd out notices and discussion about important changes.
