Do you have any artists in your family?

I checked the Relationship Finder to see if I'm related to Vincent Van Gogh, since he's my favorite artist but sadly....no.   My dad's best friend was an incredible painter but I can't think of any ancestors that were artists.

How about you?

PS Reshare the question on Facebook and get your friends and family talking.

Oh, my yes - quite a few in fact. Grandfather painted, sister does watercolors,  brother is a cartoonist and his son is well known designer for sport shoes.
If you mean an artist as a painter, then the answer is no. If you mean artist by definition then yes, my wife is an author and has several books registered in the US Library of Congress, the largest collection of books in the world.

Our Barker family has several artworks from Joshua P Barker who was born in 1830 and lived in Massachusetts. His artistic gene was passed down to several members of the family including my own son.

Yes, I'm an artist and I'm also a descendant of Sir John Lavery.  He was my great-great Uncle. There are several artists in our family, not famous like him, but artists in their own right.
Alice Gibson Hornby, My Great Grandmother 1860-1960, can be googled.  She loved to paint flowers to bring joy to a home.  Alice didn't thin most of her oils which gave them a three dimensional appearance.  She did genealogy on the family 1923. Saw the relatives & the country by Automobile from CA to PA.
why yes my mother and I are ceramic atrtist as well as my daughters who while trained have chosen other money paying careers. ButvI also dabble in fiber arts as well as painting and drawing.
I am an artist who works in pastels, watercolors and oils. I specialize in portraits. I am also a photographer and writer of plays and short stories.

As far as my ancestors, I'm still doing research. I do know the was a Metcalf who founded The American Impressionist movement, but I don't have evidence as to relation to him.
My Grandfather has his artwork published in a few books, Lee R.Updike. His favourite is to draw First Nations people and village scenes.

My father in his last decade drew unique cartoons, with whimsey and irony. He loved the New Yorker cartoons and the local comic strips.

I drew and painted everything from childhood through middle age: pencil works, watercolors, acrylic paintings (small; traditional).

In the "other" arts:  I played classical flute and piccolo from 4th grade through high school, about 9-10 years in various bands, marching bands, and orchestras. Practicing was full of pleasure for me and an old man who listened from his open window across the street. (I'm grateful that he let my mother know. I'd wondered how the woman next door liked it. She never said anything, and that was a vote in either direction.)

In college and grad school, I wrote fiction and poetry with the major works being published.

I've used my writing skills to earn money, but it is a craftsman's art so it's not a big earner.

As an adult, my "works" extended into the garden, with some seasonal successes fixing or replacing the broken ones.

I still love making in the abstract, widely applied. It is an artist's skill no matter what the medium. But I do not make cakes and pies, as my mathematically polished mother did. They were wonderful, and not to be imitated.

Hi I was wondering do you have a family tree for John Lavery as I am wondering if I could a distant connection to him.

Many Thanks

Yes, my Great Grandfather [[Laurin-17|Carl Gustav Herbert Laurin]] was a stonecutter (so his medium was granite, marble...) and he carved headstones and made decorative balls/sphere's and this marble picture frame for my Grandfather (who was a minister)

My Great Uncle [[Laurin-19|Charles Olof Laurin]] was a carver too but unlike his father the stonecutter, his medium was wood. He carved the Laurin Coat of Arms (among other many other carvings):

It came to light about 50 years ago that I am a descendant of Peter Paul Rubens.  Can’t say I carry that gift - I draw stick people.

Yes, three that come to mind quickly. Harriet Brock Pengelly, cousin to Sir Isaac Brock (but only 2nd cuz X5 to me), Charlotte Mount Brock Morrell Schreiber my grandmother's step grandmother, and, rather thrillingly, Prudence Heward (3rd cuz X1).  All are Canadian artists (partly, anyway). Me, I can't draw a stick figure, so I'm in awe.

Both my parents, Richard and Jean Erdoes, were artists.  To see some photos of them, check out their profiles: Erdos-14 and Sternbergh-1.  Also, my grandmother (Schrom-16) created amazing art nouveau puppets - dolls, really. Here's a photo of my parents sketching in the Virgin Islands, around 1950.

My grandfather, Fred (Pa) Houtenbrink was given a set of oil paints by my mother, on his 70th b-day.  He would line up several canvases, paint all of the skies/trees/water at one time ( i guess to save paint). He was quite proficient and people stood in line to get one of "pa's paintings)!  I have several that are exceptional!

I cannot find any artists in my family. God has gifted me with that talent and that is how I became interested in genealogy. I was asked to restore 2 large old photos that had been damaged in hurricane Andrew. The water damage was severe and the photos were old and brittle. I repaired the water damaged areas to the best of my ability, and tried to match the now aged and damaged color that had been added to the original photos. Before returning them to their owner, I found out that they were my great grandparents. Not satisfied, I did pencil drawings of each, knowing that the originals would not survive many more years. It took a week to do each drawing. While looking at their faces and studying their eyes I became interested in their lives. I have been hooked ever since. Andrews-11682 and Jackson-27819 are the first drawings I did that began my journey into family history. My father's mother died while he was very young and the only photo he had was an old tin plate that was fading away. He asked me to do a drawing of his mother, Garvin-675. All of these were a challenge because there was so little to work with. It has been nice to put a face to lives I have been researching.

My grandfather, Donald Buss Palmer (dad's side) was a sports cartoonist for the Cleveland and Syracuse newspapers in the 20s and 30s.  His niece, Ann Vinson, does beautiful botanical and animal drawings; and I work hard at fiber art, though  I'm still a work in progress.  :)

My  late granddad was a good artist, as was his son and 1 daughter, my late mother in law was very talented, my husband and children are talented artists. And my fave niece who lives in Idaho, is so talented it's ridiculous, she draws, paints, designs and makes her own jewellery, and when another niece married, from a photograph she crocheted a veil that matched the wedding dress perfectly xxx

I haven't learned of any in my ancestry - but I am an artist - having worked some in oils mostly.  Not much training;

I have 2 daughters who are talented  in putting words to paper - my youngest has published several books about her experiences as a K-9 handler for Search and Rescue.  She also published a book about my search for my ancestry; I was adopted at 2 1/2 years old and found my maternal family when I was 60.

My mother, Valmai Cohen, was an oil painter. She is still alive but can not see as well now so has stopped. My late brother Murray John Cohen was a painter-by-mouth whose paintings have been used around the world in countries such as Finland and Japan, on cards, calendars, and postcards. He was a quadriplegic for 24 years before his death. My remaining brother, my sisters and I all paint. I would love to find myself related to Van Gogh or other of the impressionists.
