I am hoping someone can help me.

I am trying to research the family of John "Thomas" Hope (abt. 1720-) of West Lutton. He married Margaret Allenby (1718-1808) on 17 Jan 1742 in Weaverthorpe, Yorkshire, England.

Possible children include:

(1) John Hope, bp. 23 Apr 1744 in Weaverthorpe, m. Elizabeth Stone(s) 25 Jun 1768 in Sledmere, d.?

NOTE: John's baptismal records suggest that his father's name was John.

(2) Ellenor Hope, bp. 07 Sep 1746 in Weaverthorpe.

(3) Daniel Hope, b. 1752 in Weaverthorpe, m. Ann Loscellis 17 May 1777 in  Kirby Grindalythe, d. 1837 in Weaverthorpe

(4) James Hope, bp. 28 Sep 1757 in Weaverthorpe. m. Mary Williamson 24 Nov 1785 in Brompton by Sawdon. d. 1814 in Sledmere

(5) Sarah Hope, bp 10 Aug 1760 Weaverthorpe. m. Mark Tyler 25 Nov 1790 in Weaverthorpe.

Any further information would be appreciated.

John "Thomas" tends to indicate a fudge going on.

Looks like they looked for John and found a baptism, son of John, but they couldn't find the father.  But there was a Thomas, so they thought, he'll do, and called him John Thomas.

It's very possible that the vicar had an aberration and John bp 1744 really was the son of Thomas.  The dates fit very well.
When the LDS were doing the big register transcription program from microfilms of original registers, they often started in 1720.  Earlier years were too problematic.  Most of the earlier records in the database come from printed books and other transcriptions that somebody else had done already.

Thomas was probably born before 1720, so it could be that he's on the microfilm but not in the database.

I've seen this connection on other genealogy sites, but the distance from Easington to Weaverthorpe is over an hour away (by today's driving standards). This seems too far. Also, John was a mariner (which makes it difficult to determine parentage).
