Sourcerers Challenge - February 2019

Hello, Sourcerers! It is time to start sourcing! Prior month stats will be posted soon.

IMPORTANT NOTEPlease click the "answer" link (not the comment link) to let us know that you are participating this month. You can use the tracker or list the profiles you source in a comment on your answer. Either one is perfectly fine : )

To participate:

Remember, your sources need to be as full and specific as possible, so others find them useful. That means, if the source is online, you should link to it. If it is a page from a book, the page number should be included so others can easily see where you found the reference.

When you can, it is great to do a bit more while adding sources, like clean up the gedcom leftovers or help the formatting from older profiles. Sources are important, but if you cannot find them among all the other stuff, they are not helping as much as they could.

On to the monthly challenge:

You only need to answer this month's post once. If you opt to use the Tracker you are good to go.  If you opt to  add your sourced profiles, add a comment to your answer with the required details. If you exceed the character limit add another comment.  Please number your contributions. Obviously, the Tracker is faster and less work for everyone.  If you have a problem with the Tracker let us know by posting a comment to the thread.

USING THE TRACKER

After you save an edit, a green banner appears at the top of the page. In the banner is a black “button” labeled Challenge Tracker. Press that and, on the page that comes up, select Sourcerers challenge and the appropriate comment (or fill in your own if none of the canned answers fit what you did). Hit Add Action and you are finished. The Tracker tracks the number of profiles you add sources to. You can see the results in the current month's Tracker at:

http://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/SourcerersChallenge/Default.htm  just select the most current date.

* All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and unsourced - you cannot create new profiles and add sources just to up your tally. The hope and goal is to improve the profiles already on WikiTree that need sources. Adding sources will also help merges happen, which will improve our tree. Showing folks what sources you are using helps newer researchers see just what is available out there for us to access. Another great source of unsourced profiles is to check out orphaned profiles.

* The tally is of profiles improved, not sources added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better.

*If you attempt to add sources to a profile and cannot find any, please add a note under a == Research Notes == section (add the section if it is not there) giving where you tried to find records and sign it with the four tildes (~~~~) so the date is applied as well. Something like "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and could not find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry" would be fine. Or, "Searched google for an obituary and did not find one." That way the next researcher knows where to start. Do not remove the Unsourced Template and do not use the tracker to count in your tally.

*  If the only source is a link to a profile, a search results page from another genealogy website, the words "Ancestry tree," "Geni.com," "Pedigree Resource Files" from FamilySearch, or the like, adding a better source will be a valid update for the Sourcerers' Challenge. If you add better sources to the profiles, use the Challenge Tracker to include it in your tally.

* If you find a match and can merge a profile into an already sourced profile, that counts too. You found a source, plus you eliminated a duplicate. Awesome!

The Monthly Challenge runs from midnight the first day of your month and ends at 11:59 the last day of the month. The current Current Challenge Tracker Results Page :http://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/SourcerersChallenge/20190201/User.htm has up the minute stats for those of you using the Challenge Tracker. Ask any questions here in the thread, otherwise, SOURCE!

IMPORTANT NOTEPlease click the "answer" link (not the comment link) to let us know that you are participating this month. You can use the tracker or list the profiles you source in a comment on your answer. Either one is perfectly fine : )

AND STAY TUNED WE MAY HAVE SOME MODIFICATIONS COMING SOON.  WE WILL ANNOUNCE ANY NEWS HERE.

Please withdraw me from the Sourcerer's Challenge. I've seen some blatant violations of the Honor Code and outright sabotage of what we are trying to accomplish. I will continue to do the work but in private, uncompetitive ways.
Philip please private message me with details.  We want the Challenge to be fair and above board
I understand the frustration.  I have been working on the unsourced Hungarian records and it's impossible to add sources when there is a name with no birthdate, no death date, no location and no parents.  And the source is the person who entered the information.  That seems to be a direct violation of the honor code, yet I see it over and over again.  And, to be quite frank, in respect to the Hungarian records, I honestly don't think that any of the unsourced entries listed are able to be sourced at this point.  i've spent a LOT of time looking through them, to no avail.  Just one little hint would make a HUGE difference.
Barbara if you have profiles that were uploaded by gedcom you can query for the entire gedcom and there may be clues in other entries
I'll keep this in mind, but up until now, I've only seen that a couple of times, and it took me to heritage quest.  I don't have a membership so I could not access the info.  Plus, when I checked, the records are not available online, so I made sure to note that, but, obviously, couldn't ask any source documentation. Thanks for the hint!
Today is the last day for February Sourcing.  I just opened the March url

it is located here:

If you are a new participant you must register to earn a badge.

If you are already badged, remember if you want to be counted into the competition you need to register.  If you just want to participate and have your score show up in the tracker you do not need to register.

Thanks and good luck!  If you have any questions let me know. This is a good way to learn about WT and meet some really nice people on line!
I am using the tracker to report progress. I found Phillips-3772, I believe that it needs to be merged with Phillips 20923 which has no sources. I proposed a merge.

I also have a question on another person, Andrews 11683. The only information I can find on him is where he was listed as Father in Parish records in Ironville, Derbyshire, England for his son's marriage, Andrews-11682. His son was born in Dudley, Worcestershire, England according to 1881 England and Wales Census. According to obituary he was born in Staffordshire, England, On his pension record it says he was born in Crowfield, England. I know all 3 are the same person, family members are the same. I am trying to find documentation for the son's birth, mother and more information on the father. I would appreciate any help. I am not familier with England records. Thank you
Linda I did a quick search to see how far apart Staffordhire is (that is a county in England) from Crowfiield a small hamlet in England which is about 9 miles NNW from Ispwich Suffolk County, England.  see:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowfield,_Suffolk

and

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staffordshire

These do not easily come up on map directions...

So I used Stafford the larger town in Staffordshire and Ipswich the large town in Suffolk.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Stafford,+UK/Ipswich,+United+Kingdom/@52.4105904,-2.7293597,7z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x4870827f6d0b7d5f:0x1b47b3d511d85808!2m2!1d-2.12066!2d52.806693!1m5!1m1!1s0x47d907861ed5d887:0x33ddc3ac7d2d42a9!2m2!1d1.14822!2d52.056736!3e0

They are 3+ hours  and 173 miles apart so not really close...  I would think the draft information would be more accurate than census records but someone from England would have a better answer for you.

On the profile pick the one you think is more correct and in the bio leave a note (like you did here explaining the sources for the 2 locations).  And explain why you chose the one you did.
Thank you, appreciate the help
