Hear Ye Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help.

Or if you just want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up.

Or if you even want to JOIN the Notables project and get a badge

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables

Above is the Notables Project page where you can find unconnected Notables who have profiles and who need to be connected to the tree.

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and noone can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. And they preferably should be DEAD!

OK Link to this thread from the Notables page has been updated for February. I will have to remember to update that link every month!!

Been working on adding some TV personalities, especially the somewhat famous but not the spectacularly famous.  Here are some I have added:

Tony Randall: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Rosenberg-977
Garry Moore: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Morfit-16
Charles Nelson Reilly: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Reilly-2009

Looking to add more and getting a notables badge.
Been adding notable people that I was aware of who didn't have a profile.

So far I have added:

Lou Groza-2 a famous football player for the Cleveland Browns

Clarke Hinkle-1040 an NFL Hall of Fame football player

Allen Lane-12092 the voice of TV's Mister Ed and

Keith Haring-631 famous artist and AIDS awareness advocate

Also I recently discovered Notable Emily McLaughlin-3611 while researching one of the Giffin lines and was able to connect her to her 5th great-grandfather Simon Giffin-23 which in turn connected Emily to the single world-wide WikiTree.

Does this qualify for a Notables sticker?

Thanks,

Skip.  jmagyar2@comcast.net
Hi Skip! Looks like you were awarded the Notables badge back in November, so glad to have you as part of the team!

Good to hear that you're actively adding Notables and getting them connected! Thanks for your help!
I would like to join the notables. Right now I am just interested in improving the profile of Frances Slocum (Slocum-386) She is a well known notable in Pennsylvania, She is historic and  all those  qualifications.
Welcome to the Notables Team, Jerry!

I have a few I'm working on, Former Governors of the US Virgin Islands and they are proving difficult so if anyone is interested in helping with that I would gladly welcome the aid.

For those of you interested in Irish and or the Military; I have created some pages of Irish Military Diaspora of Irish descendants or born in Ireland that served in non-Ireland Armies. A few on the list are completed, most need work, found, added or connected.

I treat these pages as work sheets so feel free to add notes, people, links etc. Although this list is mostly Notables, it is not limited to them. You can add your GG-grandfather or uncle.

As you look through the lists you might be surprised at who is there. Isabelle just informed me that John (Jean-Baptiste) Mac Mahon is an ancestor of President Mac Mahon

by Richard Devlin G2G6 Pilot (505k points)

Charles de Gaulle is another, his closest Irish ancestor being Anthony Macartan. I was also surprised at the importance of Irish immigration to France in the 18th century; it is seldom talked about and yet it is quite frequent to come across them, especially in notable families since many of them were high-ranking military officers. A very interesting topic.

The Irish have a romantic name for that period; it's called Flight of the Wild Geese

If I join the Notables Project can I change the LNAB for a profile managed by it? I have twice written to the PM of Warburton-498 ("Notables Project Wikitree") giving a source (Ancestry subscription only) which will lead to his parents and spouse and perhaps allow him to be connected. I have received no response, and it has not been followed up - unresponsive PM hardly seems appropriate. If I can do this I might have a go at connecting him, although I hardly feel he is "Notable", if not who can?
by Peter Cameron G2G6 Mach 2 (25.4k points)
I can check into that for you. Notables Project gets a lot of emails and unfortunately sometimes things do slip between the cracks. Can you please let me know what the appropriate LNAB should be? I do not have an Ancestry subscription, so you'll have to assist me in this. Thanks.

OK - found the email:

According to the California Naturalization records on Ancestry John Warburton was actually born John Frederick Barrow, 18 Jun 1903 in Liverpool (Maghull is almost in Liverpool). All his missing information (parents, spouse etc) flows from what is on this document https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/3998/40735_1220706418_0149-00690?pid=15 which I can send if you do not have access.

OK - so if you can send me something that we can link to regarding his LNAB, we should be OK to change it. I did go back through all the research and links, and it's more than likely this will cause more errors than the dates. Most of the dates in the wikidata agree with the profile, but at least one of them is off by 1 day. I think it's a wikidata error myself, but I'm not an expert in that area.

All the Wikipedia, IMDB, etc. all do not reflect the LNAB of Barrow, so we'll want to have something to hold up against scrutiny by anyone who might follow on and question the change. I don't have a problem going against all other sources found on the internet, but just want to make sure we have evidence to present.
Sorry - one other thing. While I don't have Ancestry access, I'm OK if the evidence is there and I can't see it. I'm not a huge fan of things "locked behind the paywall", however, that does not make it any less valid and as long as you can obtain access and view it, then it's fine with me. I can actually go into my library and use their access, as I'm sure others can as well, or pay for a month and do the same.
Thanks for checking, that is my e-mail - but you haven't really answered my question. I am quite happy to chase up the sources indicated by the document (a naturalization petition) and add them to the profile or do you want me to send you a copy? Should I join the Notables Project or does this not matter?
The Notables Project would be irrelevant to making this correction.
And I'm happy if the sources are part of the profile - no need to mail me. Let me know once they're on there, and I'll make the change. Thanks!!

I started working on unconnected notables recently, so can I request a badge please and thank you.

Earlier today I was able to connect baseball player Jackie Robinson ... but it was through a living person who won't show publicly. So I am waiting for the overnight update to see if it will now show the global tree connection tomorrow for Jackie.

Still working on a few Honorary Academy Award winners from 1939 who received the award for areas in cinematography/sound effects/special effects/etc.

Art Smith -> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smith-178396

Harry D. Mills -> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mills-14993

Walter Oberst -> https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Oberst-79

All 3 are connected. Still one more to go:

Allen Davey (IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0202695/?ref_=nv_sr_2 )

So almost there...

by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Allen Davey is proving to be a challenge. I've hunted up and down his ancestral lines, through marriages and such, and so far been unsuccessful. I've found a pretty prolific line in the Tozer's and Early's that shows some promise and may have to flesh out many profiles in the lines before a connection presents itself. It's giving me a chance to explore WikiTree-X more as once I get the data worked out on FamilySearch, I can create the profile pretty quickly from there. But it's taking time to do the initial research where little has been done before.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Davey-2041
And just as fast - he's connected. His sister was married to a famous silent film movie industry person (David Horsley) who had previously been researched and connected. Whew! was starting to think I was building a new island of unconnecteds...
I got sidetracked working on the ancestors of comedian Bill Cosby, and decided to start with his great-grandfather Zachariah. From what I can tell, he had many children. I've got most of them entered, but lots of possible opportunities to branch out towards potential connections.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cosby-507

Still need to add 2 more children, but hope to finish that today, then I can move on to marriages.
That's a good idea. Instead of whining that profiles for living entertainers are unlisted, start way back at the beginning and work forward!
Got all his children added - starting on his grandchildren. Adding spouses along the way. I'll get burnt out on this soon, but I think once I get through this pass, I'll take a break and work on my own family for a bit. Hopefully the additional profiles will give others an opportunity to add to his family as well and maybe one day we'll have a connection...

I added actor James Best (profile Guy-2648) from the Dukes of Hazzard.  I've been working on Harrison County, Indiana genealogy and was working on his adopted family.  I actually did meet him in Corydon in 2014.  My husband and I were staying at a local hotel and I passed him in the hall and we said good morning to each other.  I was racking my brain trying to figure out why he looked so familiar (and I grew up watching the Dukes of Hazzard).  It wasn't until I walked out in the parking lot and saw a car with a North Carolina vanity plate that read ROSCOE, that it dawned on my who it was.
by Kellie Rhodes G2G6 Mach 3 (35.5k points)
Very cool! I enjoyed the Dukes TV show. Always thought it would be fun to have a car that could make crazy jumps, spin around, and take off like a rocket.
I lived in Georgia when they were filming the show. It used to confuse my seven year old self to see car carriers with wrecked General Lee's go by on their way to a junkyard. As an adult watching the show, I can now understand the damage I was seeing, and cringe at some of those jumps.

British Actor Albert Finney has died.

He was in the 1963 movie - Tom Jones. He was also in the famous movie Erin Brockovich with Julia Roberts.

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/british-actor-albert-finney-dies-82-141016639.html?.tsrc=bell-brknews

And his profile is already opened.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Finney-1511
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

I found a connection for Albert Finney, though unfortunately it goes through two living people, including his French ex-wife.

The path connects him to (already connected) Doris Rankin. I'm afraid I failed at finding census records for several of these people and the sources (essentially Wikipedia, IMDb and Find A Grave) are far from being as good as I could wish.

If there is fan of Broadway actors around, there is plenty of room to improve them.

I was very moved by Albert Finney's performance as John Newton in Amazing Grace.

Hello!

I created a profile for Alfred Charles Kinsey: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kinsey-1622 before I realized that he needed to be added by the Notables Crew.  Not sure what  needs to be done to fix this. (Gained interest after watching the movie.)

I found that he is in the FBI Records Vault for being under investigation surrounding his work. Is there a project for those Notables who have passed on and have records there?

I also want to work on Don Cheadle's (Donald Frank Cheadle Jr.) ancestry to see if there is a connection to my family, but since he is living, I don't know if I can. He has genealogy research started as he was on the PBS show, African American Lives II. Or can I just start with one of his ancestor's?

Any help is much appreciated as I am brand new to WikiTree. Thank You!

by Tiffany Thompson G2G3 (3.1k points)
Hi Tiffany - the whole subject of restricted profiles and living Notables is unfortunately a sensitive one, and at the moment one that is still undetermined as it relates to who can and cannot edit these profiles. The easiest way to approach it is to develop his non-living tree and ask to have the tree (generally parents or even grandparents) added to the living Notable profile. So for example, if you wanted to develop Don Cheadle's tree, you might determine if his parents are still living, and if they are not, find out if existing profiles exist for them, and if not, create them. Then build his tree out from that point towards older ancestors. Once you feel you have his parents in order, you can ask for them to be linked to Don's profile.

Thank You for the reply!

Yes, that is the best way to go!  And if no one else has already, I'll have a good start with the information I can get from the TV show. LoL

I've since gone off on other tangents, but it's still an interest if mine to work on next! laugh

François Barbé de Marbois, French politician and diplomat who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase treaty, is now connected to the global tree, as is the one-time President of Pennsylvania, William Moore.

by Greg Lavoie G2G6 Pilot (371k points)
Thanks, it's also nice to see more family added to the Dukes of Plaisance, they have a number of interesting connections.

I actually ended up creating two connection paths for Barbé this past weekend, with another one running through the duc de Valmy.  As a result, Anne Charles Lebrun, duc de Plaisance is now only four degrees away from Kellermann and five degrees from the Canadian-born François Joseph Chaussegros de Léry.

The Bégon family of colonial administrators and naturalists is now connected to the global tree.  Michel Bégon (1667-1747) served as Intendant of New France from 1712-1726.

Good to see one more intendant of New France connected!

Hi Greg, would you be interested in creating a profile for Blanche Monnier, since I see you are interested in French topics. It would be interesting to see her linked to the tree.

I just added and connected Ronald William Miller. He was a former CEO and president of The Walt Disney Company as well as Walt Disney's Son in Law. He also played football for the L. A. Rams.

I was pondering adding a profile for Jules Ferry, who is famous in France for making primary education free, non-clerical and mandatory. (His involvement in colonial expansion was far less talked of at the time I was at school). Because of that, he is the French notable with the biggest number of primary schools bearing his name. The top scorers are:

  1. Jules Ferry (642 schools)
  2. Jacques Prévert (472)
  3. Jean Moulin (434)
  4. Jean Jaurès (429)
  5. Jeanne d'Arc (423)
  6. Antoine de Saint Exupéry (418)
  7. Victor Hugo (365)
  8. Louis Pasteur (361)
  9. Marie Curie (360)
  10. Pierre Curie (357)
  11. Jean de La Fontaine (335)

Of these, only Jules Ferry, Jacques Prévert and Jean Jaurès don't have a profile yet, so I'll try to make sure they have one by the end of the month. Ferry would have a possible connection through his in-laws. The two others are likely to be a big challenge.

by Isabelle Martin G2G6 Pilot (566k points)

Now Jules Ferry is connected, and Jaurès and Prévert both have their profiles.

I've been adding or trying to connect Notables as I come across them but I've had no luck trying to join the Notables Project. I left a post here as directed but it must have been a "comment" rather than an "answer" as I received no reply. Can I please be added as a member of your project?

Thank you,

Skip

PS - I added Bushrod Rust Johnson (Johnson-79927) as a Notable yesterday.
by Living Magyar G2G6 Mach 2 (22.2k points)
Hi Skip - as mentioned above, you were awarded the Notables badge back in November, so no need to add you again. But definitely appreciate the work you've done! Thanks!

I could use some help! I came across a Notable lately while working to connect this guy:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lavigne-666

This is part of my New Year's Resolution to clean out papers & pix I have gathering dust in various closets & on various shelves. Right now, that means working through the pictures in a bound volume of Harper's Weekly magazine from 1863, so it's largely soldiers from the US Civil War. At present, I'm working on connecting the second of five officers of the US Colored Troops from Louisiana. The first was quick, the second is NOT quick. (I'd love some help!)

Anyhow, while working to connect 2nd Lt. V. Lavigne, I came across a prominent musical family in New Orleans. One member was Louisa (Dupont) Barker, stage name Blue Lu Barker. And then, by serendipitous coincidence, I noticed there was a Grammy nomination this year for a tribute album to Blue Lu Barker in the Traditional Blues Album category this year, artist Maria Muldaur. Someone else took the award home, but it's still a nifty bit of serendipity. Blue Lu and several notables from her husband's family are all disconnected.

I'd love some help!

by Living Winter G2G6 Mach 7 (78.5k points)

This is an interesting record. It appears to show an application for a pension, but the units mentioned don't line up exactly with what is in the profile. It's conceivable there were a few guys with the same name in general, but quite a coincidence if they both had wives with the same names:

"United States General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934", database with Images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDBW-FF9 : 13 March 2018), Victor Lavigne, 1889.

Seems likely this could be him, based on this description of colored infantry units:

http://civilwararchive.com/Unreghst/uncolinf3.htm

91st Regiment Infantry

Organized April 4, 1864, from 20th Corps de Afrique Infantry. Garrison duty at Fort Pike, Defenses of New Orleans, La., until July, 1864. Pearl River Expedition April 1-10 (Cos. "C," "D," "E" and "F"). Consolidated with 74th United States Colored Troops July 7, 1864.

Thank You

Welcome to the Notables Team! And good luck on CJ Walker's profile connection! I live in Indianapolis where we have the Madame C.J. Walker Theatre Center, so I'm definitely familiar with her name.
Thanks So Much!

I'm hoping to visit the theatre someday!  It's probably going to be gaining some more popularity with the new Netflix series that's coming out about her life and legacy.
