How does Wikitree identify potential matches?

I am currently inputting a long and involved family history which, particularly where there are cousin marriages does involve some duplication of listings. The reason I ask the question is that yesterday the system failed to pick up what I would regard as a fairly obvious match; the surname was the same, the forenames similar, although some change of order and for one name a different spelling, date of birth was identical and although one was more detailed, places of birth etc. were identical. I immediately merged, although in hindsight it may have been more useful if I hadn't but I do wonder if the issue needs looking at.

On a second point the family history that I am entering contains a lot of extraneous, if interesting material about the Bangert family and I wondered if there was anywhere that this could be written up. The history is a fine piece of work and was written in German in 1932. As far as I know, I am in possession of the only English translation running to some150 pages.

Hi Derek,

Our search algorithims aren't very advanced. They just match names and dates. If you show me two profiles I might be able to say why they're not being suggested as matches.

Regarding extra material, you could consider a free-space profile for it.

Cheers,

Chris

Wading through it (the book isn't indexed), the only differences seems to have been that the first entry was Marie (with an 'e') Karoline Friederike Bangert born 18 May 1806, the second Maria with an 'a' Friederike Karoline i.e. reversed order. All other entries the same, or the second just more detailed than the first. Several other potential matches did come up, but not this one. I have of course now merged them so if I made a howler it has disappeared.

I'm afraid you will have to explain 'free-space profile' to me. My knowledge of IT is strictly limited...

Thanks again.

Derek
Hi Derek,

"Free-space profile" isn't IT-speak, it's WT-speak. :-)
