Challenge of the week: Clean up as many location names as possible [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge? This week's challenge focuses on location fields.

Aleš has prepared a report of profiles from around the tree that have potential errors in their locations. These are usually simple typos that are easy to fix. But a thinking genealogist needs to give them a quick "reality check" and consider the intent of the original member and the sources before making any changes. Will you try some?

After making a change, click the "challenge tracker" button and then the edit the status. This will record a point. The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. This helps us coordinate and cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

Challenge Tracker

Hello, Is anyone else having loading issues?  Very slow loading or just doesn't load at all.  Sorry, if you come across profiles that status haven't been updated.  Will follow up when loading is fixed.
Yea same problem here
Yes, I hate it's happening but glad it know it's not just me.
New Data Doctor here - I accept the challenge!

Experiencing not loading issues.

Our server is under maintenance and will not be online for another 2-3 hours. Sorry about that.

Am I crazy or are the tracking results for a different week?

It's fine. Thank you.

I was already on my way to bed and took one final look and saw you posted the new challenge 4 minutes ago. That was a close one Aleš. 5 minutes later and the spreadsheet wouldn't have been updated for 8-10 hours. cheeky

Can I ask everyone to take a look at their suggestion list to see if the word Cemetery appears in any of their profiles? I'm the England Project person with responsibility for [631 - wrong word in death location], and while Unknown and Probably are easy to correct in death locations, Cemetery is another kettle of fish altogether.

There are 486 death location errors remaining in the England Project errors spreadsheet - most are now Cemetery.

I have no idea if that person dropped dead in the cemetery (unlikely), died in the same town as the cemetery, or died elsewhere and had their remains shipped home. Please edit the death location field if any of these are yours.

Gratefully yours!

Jo

Excellent point to make for death locations, Jo!
I'm in England Project, too, but have trouble quickly navigating to the Englad error list during a challenge.  Do you happen to have the URL for the England list?

Thanks!
Hi Anonymous

Here's the link to the England Project Error / Suggestion spreadsheet:

... and here is the England Project Data Doctors page with the list of all the categories and the people looking after each one:

Good luck!

Jo
Thanks for the plug Jo

I know this is probably a pretty basic question and I "think" I know the answer, but I want to be sure. On some of these error reports, I've been correcting the names of states in the data fields. Sometimes there is a second error suggestion saying there is a misspelled COUNTRY for the field, when the PM didn't put a country at all (the entry ends with the state name.) Does a missing country generate the DB-608 Misspelled Country Error Code also? Or did the misspelled state generate BOTH error codes--misspelled state and misspelled country since the country name was missing? And, if this is true, do I just go ahead and add USA to clear the DB-608 code?

Here is an example profile...Samuel Cook

It is possible it caused both errors. And in some cases you might not want to put country like say Massachusetts in 1775 because that would be ANOTHER error.
Shouldn't NH USA be rendered differently?  Isn't there normally a comma between state and country .. and shouldn't the state be spelt out in full?  (In other words .. would those cause an error?)
I was only correcting the spelling of the state in the birth field and didn't work on the death field, Melanie, but I would think you could be correct, if the WikiTree style guide for place names were applied completely.
Good point, Steven. Hopefully, correcting the state name Massachusetts will clear up both errors for next week's error report.

"404 - File or directory not found.

The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable." Just a heads up, getting this error from the spreadsheet.

All the best,
Janet
