This is a wedding day, 21 Jan 1903, photo of my husband's Great Grandaunt Jennie Parker. She lived to be 99 and had a remarkable mind for a lady her age. She lived 30 years longer than he did, but she never stopped loving John and their life together. They never had children, but she was the family historian and kept us entertained with her wonderful stories.

This is one of the last pictures of my father's parents, Rob and Pauline Boy together. The entire family was at my maternal Grandmother's house celebrating Christmas in early January 1978 because both Rob and Pauline had flu at Christmas time. They are on the couch watching someone across the room open a present - and holding hands. They were definitely sweethearts in the evenings they would play what they called "Double Sol" or double solitaire. Their way to play was to sit opposite each other across the card table each would have their own deck of cards and each would play their own game - but they were doing it together.

What a charming story. They do look very happy together. Thanks for sharing.
They are so cute together. I love the way they are holding hands while watching TV.

This is a wedding day photo of one of the most loving couples I have known, My great uncle Verne Eastman and wife Glade Kosier Eastman. She nursed him, a doctor, through Lou Gehrig's disease.

It is easy to see  how devoted she is to him. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful photo.
I agree with Alexis. And he looks happy and contented as well. Thanks for sharing this photo.
That is truly love. I know when you say your vows, that through sickness is one of them. But to actually do it is another thing. She is looking at him with so much love.

Thank you for sharing.

My maternal grandparents were married in Franklin, Mississippi on December 28, 1912. My Grandfather Lee was 21, and worked at the sawmill - his parents had both died, and he had helped get his three younger siblings out of the Methodist Orphanage in Natchez. Grandma Bertha, an only child, lived with her maternal grandparents Monroe and Elizabeth, in 1910. She ran off at 16 to marry Lee. They had nine children. Grandpa (I never knew him) died May 14, 1956 - they had been married 44 years!!! Grandma lived to be 79 years old.

We were MARRIED on Valentine's Day, 1973 in Hutchinson, Kansas at the Reno County Courthouse.
I met Christin Wayne Purdue when we were both 16 years old. We lived in the same apartment complex, across the parking lot from each other. That summer of 1971, I had traveled to/from Connecticut to visit my mother - HE had hitchhiked to/from San Diego, California to see his friends. I was attracted to his wandering soul - and he loved my nurturing nature. After our first son was born, Chris joined the Army, and we moved to Fort Ord, California, where our 2nd child was born in June, 1975. The day of her birth, Chris received orders for Germany.
He moved me and our kids to Texas where my parents and grandparents lived. He came home in December, 1975 - but was killed in a car/semi accident on January 20, 1976 - two weeks before our 3rd wedding anniversary.

What a wonderful love story. I'm so sorry for your lost. Thank you for sharing the photo and the story.
Thank you, Robin. He was a wonderful man. I think of the song "Abraham, Martin, and John" when I think of Chris. Only the good die young. And Christin was one of those good men.
I was so happy to hear your story, until I heard that you lost your husband. You were so young. You have my sympathy. Such a sad, hard loss for you.

My mother's parents were sweethearts. My grandfather Peter knew my grandmother's brother in college, and got to know her through him. After he moved out to California, they wrote letters to each other regularly. He always described this photo as him writing a love letter to Edith.

Eventually, they got married, and she came out to California. Here's their wedding photo. They were married in Kuna, Idaho, on Christmas day of 1913, where she was living with family. She had recently recovered from Typhoid fever, and had lost her hair while she was ill. It was just starting to grow back in. She was embarrassed because it was so short and thin, still.

Here's a photo of them back in southern California, digging the foundation ditch for their first house that they would build together, with help from family. My grandfather was a math teacher, but also a carpenter. He labelled the photo "United labor".

500px-Stoner-632-5.jpg

Look at the smile on Edith's face as she wields that shovel. That is true love! There is a photo of "Turning over first sod" (with a team of horses), dated May 18, 1914. Here is the house when it was just finished, on July 26th of the same year. Pretty speedy. My grandfather was a workaholic.

My grandmother died of cancer when she was 68. Before she died, she told my grandfather that she didn't want him to be lonely, and that he should remarry. And she gave him a list. He did marry one of the women on the list, who was Edith's niece (but not much younger than she was). He outlived her, also.

Wow, not everyone can build their own house in two months!  Most contractors can't even do that!

Very handsome couple & a great story!
What a lovely set of pictures. Thank you for the history.
Obviously, they did everything together. That does make a marriage much stronger.

What a wonderful couple. Thank you for sharing.

Great-grandparents, Faye Mary Abbott and Elmer Ranck - their wedding photo taken in Grand Island, Nebraska.  I looked up the photographer from the mark on the photo and found his ad in a 100 year old newspaper.

They migrated from the Midwest together all the way to California.

Lovely couple. Thank you for sharing it.
I love old pictures, and I really love this picture.

Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Robin & Cheryl - glad you liked it.  Tragic story really: she developed a brain tumor and died a long and painful death.  My Grandfather as a small boy witnessed it, her deterioration and pain, and it affected him terribly.  As a testament to their love, Elmer never remarried.
I'm so sorry to hear the terrible story for this lovely couple. Elmer obviously loved her very much.

My grandparents wedding in September 1920. They were married for 49 years. Lily died in 1969. Roy died in 1989.

While I do remember my grandfather Roy, as seen in the photos on his profile, I do not remember my grandmother Lily. She died when I was barely 5 years old

For this week's challenge, I picked my parents.  They met as teenagers, fell in love and were married in 1955.   They loved each other every day for nearly 60 years.

These photos are of my maternal grandparents. The first is their wedding photo from 1902. The second is from their 60th wedding anniversary party in 1962. You can see that they were still very much in love at that time. They raised seven children together, had 19 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.  They both were dearly loved by us all.

52 Photos Week 7 Sweethearts

500px-Hess-4072-1.jpg

For sweethearts week, I would like to introduce you to a couple that I think truly lived their lives as sweethearts. They are my husband's parents.  Wallace (Popsy) and Margaret (Maggie) Laking Hess.

Popsy started dating Maggie's sister, Aunt Edie, but soon fell in love with Maggie. Soon began a secret love affair that would last over a half a century. We learned a lot of their story after, Maggie's death in their secret love letters that we found. They wrote each other for almost two years before they got married.

Popsy lived in Momence, Illinois and Maggie lived in Grant Park, Illinois (a distance of 6 miles). After Maggie's parents went to bed, Popsy would roller skate to her house to visit. After midnight he would roller skate back home.

In one letter, Maggie revealed how they secretly got engaged, and how difficult it was to hide her ring from her parents. How a couple of times she forgot to take it off and put it in her apron, and had to hide her hand in her clothes. They secretly married on Feb. 6, 1935 in Indiana.  They did have an official wedding on April 13, 1935.

For 53 years they were happily married. They had 12 children together, with one dying at birth. They held hands if they were watching TV, driving in the car, or walking to church. After Popsy retired, you never saw one without the other.

They set a wonderful example for their children, and all of them are happily married, except for one. My husband is the same way his father was. Always holding my hand.

I think this is the perfect couple for Sweethearts week, and I am so glad they were a part of my life. I miss them both so much.

I wanted to upvote your lovely picture and story, but pressed the wrong arrow. Sorry about that, don't know how to change it.
Maria - Thank you. I think you vote up, which should take the down vote away - and then you should be able to up vote it.  That would be great. Thank you so much.
Oh, good, it worked.
