52 Photos Week 7 Sweethearts
For sweethearts week, I would like to introduce you to a couple that I think truly lived their lives as sweethearts. They are my husband's parents. Wallace (Popsy) and Margaret (Maggie) Laking Hess.
Popsy started dating Maggie's sister, Aunt Edie, but soon fell in love with Maggie. Soon began a secret love affair that would last over a half a century. We learned a lot of their story after, Maggie's death in their secret love letters that we found. They wrote each other for almost two years before they got married.
Popsy lived in Momence, Illinois and Maggie lived in Grant Park, Illinois (a distance of 6 miles). After Maggie's parents went to bed, Popsy would roller skate to her house to visit. After midnight he would roller skate back home.
In one letter, Maggie revealed how they secretly got engaged, and how difficult it was to hide her ring from her parents. How a couple of times she forgot to take it off and put it in her apron, and had to hide her hand in her clothes. They secretly married on Feb. 6, 1935 in Indiana. They did have an official wedding on April 13, 1935.
For 53 years they were happily married. They had 12 children together, with one dying at birth. They held hands if they were watching TV, driving in the car, or walking to church. After Popsy retired, you never saw one without the other.
They set a wonderful example for their children, and all of them are happily married, except for one. My husband is the same way his father was. Always holding my hand.
I think this is the perfect couple for Sweethearts week, and I am so glad they were a part of my life. I miss them both so much.
