I don't have a lot of ancestral photos. Having a photo taken was likely seen as an indulgent luxury -- or simply something that didn't fit the budget. Maybe that lack of photos from his childhood is why my dad was always so insistent on taking pictures as my sisters and I were growing up.

What is a family photo that has special meaning for you? Tell about the people in the photo, when and where it was taken, and why it was taken.

I don't have much in the way of "ancestral" photographs (my mother's only child kept them after Mother died) .. am I allowed to post a pic of living people if I have their permission?

I do not have any family photos of my ancestors on any WikiTree profile because they are not my photos to upload; however, my great-grandfather's profile (Leonard Charles Utting) does contain a photo of him in his military uniform from his service in the First World War.

This is my great grandparents Alvin Porter and Phoebe Palestine Long homesteading the land they acquired in the 1893 Oklahoma Land Run. My grandmother is the child in the highchair, and the sod house behind them is where they lived. They had 12 children, and they all lived to over seventy years of age.

Thanks Robin, Phoebe and her youger sister made the run together. Alvin Porter had the land next to her’s. He got sick, and she took care of him, so he married her.There are several photos of the run, but I have never seen one with two women in a wagon.

I think it illustrates Amy Johnson Crow's point, pictures were rare - I notice how each of the children is paying attention the camera.  

I come from a large family, and we have lots of Kodak shots of family groups, but usually there is at least one squirmer to spoil the perfection.  This one is perfect!

One of the earliest family photos is taken in 1910. Four men and a woman sitting round a table while one of the man is pouring everyone a cup of tea/coffee. The photo is taken of the siblings van Hout during the visit of their brother Anton to the home country who had emigrated to the USA in 1887. It was such a special occasion that a professional photographer was hired to make this picture (and another of the whole village before the local church) I have the original of my branch of the family. The descendants of Anton in South Dakotah have another one.

This is the Capes Clan - I know who half of the people are in this picture, while the other half are complete mysteries to me. But the familial resemblance is uncanny! Photos are amazing little windows into the past and I love and treasure each one.

Both my grandmothers had photo albums that I became the recipient of. They were both the old ones with black "construction type paper" which of course over the long run destroys photos. One grandmothers are glued on the pages. Here's her picture with her older brother Emerson and younger siblings Frances and William.

I don't have any pictures of my 2X great-grandmother, Caterina. However, I do have pictures of her siblings, Concetta, Rosa, Giovanni and Paolo. Concetta in this picture is in the back row and second from the right. Rosa is right in front of her. This was taken around 1944 and is in the Italians in Haverhill book. Wish I had a pic of Caterina. She stayed in Italy and all of her siblings came to America.

Front row is my 2x great-grandfather, Joseph Laplante holding my mother. Behind him from left to right is Joseph's wife, Georgianna, my grandfather, Robert and his mother Clara. Clara's holding my aunt Susan. This was taken in the early 1950s.

Yeah! The height of late 19th century fashion right there. In her later years, Georgianna had a long, long hair braid. Kind of cheated having two pics of Joseph and Georgianna up there. Whoops. Oh well!

I don't have many family photos the ones I have are from my divorced parents wedding album. When my grandmother died we lost her house. It sat vacant for years and my cousin bought it. His wife felt that our family memories were not worth sifting through as she shoveled them out into a garbage bin. The phrase she used on Facebook to blast a woman she never knew because her husband didn't want to spend the time of day seeing her or her last moments was "I can't believe anyone could ever live like this, so disgusting."

I thank god everyday for friends who knew my grandparents because they help to share those lost memories.

This isn't a family group, shot, its the only surviving picture of my great-grandfather Reverend William Reid Robinson. 

He grew up in an impoverished family in rural New Brunswick, and put himself through university the hard way - working to earn the money for each year, and never knowing if when he would manage to get back for another year of studies. But he persisted, and was ordained a Baptist minister at the age of 35. After about 8 years of exploring the luxuries of his new life, he walked away, and dedicated his life to the poor on the Saint John New Brunswick harbourfront. 

There are no pictures in part because of the cost, and in part because he walked away. His wife's family cut him off, but his career and passions inspired his son, then my mother, me, and now my daughter in our career choices.  

Plus, he looks just like my brother.

This is not the best picture, but I just love it anyway. My great-grandma, Grace Roberts Mott always seems like such a classy, wonderful lady in all of the pictures I've seen of her. She passed away when I was 7 years old, so I really have no memories of her, but I love that this picture captures the craziness and chaos of kids and Grace is just standing in the middle of it with such grace! This is a photo of her with most of her great-grandchildren two years before she passed away at the age of 84.

This is one of my favorite family photos. It is of my maternal grandparents and their seven children. I believe it was taken around 1930.

They are (in the back row) Mildred, T., Helen, (in the front row) Ruth, Betty (my mother), Otis, Harold, Bertha, and Alice.  They lived in Canon City, Fremont, Colorado.

Look at the family resemblance!  The children who don't look like their father are the spitting image of their mother, there aren't too many recessive genes apparentl!  I wonder if the resemblance is still apparent in the modern generation.

Laurie, I agree with you. In my family we mostly take after my father's side though some have said my sister and I look like my mom. All the aunts and uncles are gone now, but as children and young adults, a lot of the cousins were obviously Witcher's.

My great great grandfather, George Pinckney, hit the Oregon Trail in the late 1800's, and veered north into Canada where he established a homestead (and where my grandfather was born).  I have one picture of him on the trail with his fellow travelers roughing the harsh winter conditions.  This is by far my favorite family photo.

Wow! A Kodak moment on the Oregon Trail.  I can imagine packing the equipment on the journey, but I can't imagine pulling it all out and setting up in those conditions. And the boys don't look like they were stopping for long.  Do you know which one is your grandfather?

Thanks for sharing this wonderful photo. My husband and I have been"camping out" for the past two weeks in our tent trailer while we wait for our new home. We've had lots of weather including a bit of snow, but it hasn't been like your gg grandfather's adventure. My hat is off to him.

What a fabulous family photo! Even though I also come from a pioneer family, I’m sure that I could have never survived the way they did. This photo is certainly a treasure.

Hoping this works as I have never added a picture before. This is a more recent photo in that is of myself and my family - however it is around 50yrs old and the ONLY photo I have of the five of us together, so it is VERY special to me.  My parents used to have professional photos taken of us kids together every year  which were used to create Christmas Cards,, this is the only year that I know of that they joined us in the studio

My interest in genealogy began in 2017 after my Aunt passed away. She was my mother's only sister and one of very few living relatives we had any contact with. Among her few possessions was a photograph of her parents' wedding and looking at that photo with my mother and trying to identify who was in it was the first time I really found out anything about her family.

I don't remember seeing this photo when I was young.  We found it in a family collection a few years ago.  It's my great grandparents and their children, including my granny, from around 1910.  My granny was the only one of my four grandparents still alive when I was born and she died when I was a very small child. 

I think this must have been taken professionally because of the pose and how they are dressed.  My great grandfather William always has a twinkle in his eyes in photographs, in contrast with my great grandmother Janet, who tends to look a bit dour!
