So many family photos are posed photos with stiff smiles. Thank goodness my relatives didn't mind hamming it up for photos.
Pictured are my great uncles Lou Schneider and Chic Trillitzsch and John Graf, a family friend. They were at a family picnic and baseball game in Merrick LI. As best I can guess, the photo was taken in the late 1930s. John is holding a poster of the Schnitzelbank song, this particular version created with slightly different lyrics from the traditional version to advertise the Jacob Ruppert Brewery, one of the largest in the world, although its business never regained its prominence after Prohibition was repealed. Ruppert was an important New York figure; he bought the Yankees baseball team, built Yankee Stadium and brought a player named Babe Ruth into the franchise. I don't know if any of my relatives had any connection to the brewery, but I have no doubt (from the series of photos this one is part of) that they enjoyed their brew.
I remember how much fun Uncles Chic and Louie were to be around, This joy is why this photo is a favorite of mine.
