Challenge of the Week: Clean up names [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our Data Doctors Challenge this week?

Aleš's "WikiTree+" data analysis has uncovered thousands of profiles with special characters or words in name fields that probably don't belong there. There are parentheses that need to be removed, suffixes that need to be moved to the Suffix field, and much more.

Here is the table of likely problems and issues.

Although the changes might be simple and fast, a thoughtful genealogist like you needs to investigate and make the decision.

After you investigate something, set the status [more info]. That will earn you a point. The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on, and it will help us avoid stepping on each others' toes. Also post here if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

Wrong word in LNAB is my choice
I'd love to participate but so far I can't figure out how to get to anything. I just keep clicking on stuff and getting nowhere... Maybe I'm not the best to help. LOL
Will help as much as I can.

I'm in... working on Canada

I going to help with this, too; starting with British Columbia and Nova Scotia.
Sounds good. Here's the Canada Suggestion List:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Automated:DD_Suggestion_List_CAN

There are a lot of name suggestions for the LNAB field (which only the pm/trusted can fix).... so I'll send some emails to pm's that have LNAB suggestions in Ontario.
Sorry, that message was from me!
OK, great.
Hi Jill,

Let me know if you have an error number you think I should try next on the Canada list. Thanks.
Nothing in particular.  I picked 771 and I'm working my way down that list and then I think I'll move back to the Canadian Unsourced list.  I resolved quite a few name suggestions a month or so ago.  Well, all but LNAB suggestions and unique names.  Personally, I find unique names difficult to resolve, because it can be a typo on a document or a name in another language - or really just a unique name.  So I try to find two sources with the same spelling which can sometimes be difficult and time consuming.  Not sure if there is a better way to resolve those?  I have some of them on my own list that I can't seem to resolve with two sources, lol  Anyway, back to the original topic... I'm only in 771 - so you can pick pretty much any other one that appeals to you and we won't be duplicating efforts.

Thanks, Jill. I agree with you on the unique names. I will have a look and see if there's more I can do but will probably be moving on soon to other tasks.

Every profile I clicked on from the table has Green privacy and can't be edited.
answered by Mark Burch G2G6 Mach 3 (34.1k points)
don't select the suggestions that have the Green privacy,  Select only the clear ones, less frustration.

Is my thought correct? - If a person is a Princess and the profile owner wants Princess Elisabeth to show up when you come to the page then the preferred name has to be Princess Elisabeth or it just shows up as Elisabeth of Denmark, not want the preferred name is. Do I mark it as a false suggestion?

Same situation with people who are a Jr and are called Junior and that's what they want their preferred name to be.

Please help!!
answered by Lucy Robinson G2G3 (3.9k points)
You have to check sources or review existing sources to see what the name is supposed to be.  If sources show that the nickname is Junior or his birth name is Junior, as an example, then you would mark the suggestion as a False suggestion, BUT you need to make sure there are sources in the profile that have that verification.

Thank you Linda.
