In the second Quarter of 1880 Stephen married Anna Maria Giles. The 1881 census shows Stephan and Anna at Barrow Hill Farm, Farmborough (1881 England Census Class: RG11; RD: Clutton; ED: 4; Piece: 2427; Folio: 43; Page: 9; GSU roll: 1341584) Anna's mother Maria and her sister Marianne are also living in the house. Anna died in 1883. (England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index District Clutton Vol 5c Page 342) The 1891 and subsequent censuses show Stephen's wife as Marianne. They had 5 (or maybe 6) children.
I can't locate a marriage record for the two. Under English Law in 1885 would it have been legal for Stephan and Marianne to marry?
