I want to import a GEDCOM and then link at at both ends to existing WT families.

Hi, I am fairly new to WT.  A few years ago I manually added my family from myself to all grandparents and then added sisters, some of my cousins and their families. I now want to import a GEDCOM (with sources) that will be a child of Williams-913 and then populate down and link it to my grandfather.  It should look something like this:

----------       New child of Williams-913

----------       a bunch of generations imported

----------       Link last generation of import to my grandfather

It's not a huge import...only 42 people.  What is the best method for doing this?  Any inputs are appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

You might want to do some Clean Up on Williams-913 first Mark. You have the Biographies area a little out of sorts.

See: Help:Biographies

and: Help:GEDCOM-Created Biographies Clean up

Multiple instances of ==Biography== and ==Sources== tend to give the program a wee bit of trouble.

No longer a problem, LJ.

Do the GEDCompare, import, etc.

Connect Williams-913 as the father of newly-imported children.

Connect your great grandparent as parent of your grandfather.

Clean up all the imported profiles.

That's how you would do it.  I'm not certain that it's any less work than creating 42 profiles manually.

Thanks for the quick response Herbert!  I may give this a try.  Mark
You're welcome!  Good luck!

Thanks for the inputs Mr. Russell.  I didn't create Williams-913 and do not manage that profile.  At this point, I am focusing on adding my family below him.  Once I get that all cleaned up, I may be able to work on Williams-913 and/or his ancestors.  Enjoy your day!  Mark

Mark, Williams-913 has eight children and several generations of descendants already present on the Tree.  Are you sure you need to fill the entire gap between him and your grandfather?  Also, since he's a pre-1700 person, adding a new child might tweak some WT sensitivities.  Caution advised!  wink

Thanks Herbert.  Joseph Williams Jr. had 10 children.  I am trying to add one of the missing ones and the generations that then flow down to me.  At this point I have a GEDCOM compare and there are only 4-5 people that might already be in WT.  I am trying to resolve those now with the managers of those profiles.  Once I get that figured out, I will import and clean up any issues.  At least that is my plan right now!  Thanks, Mark

OK, just checking.  Pre-1700 being a bit of a minefield and all.  yes

I am always concerned about the older stuff since I am still new to WT.  However, this line of Williams is somewhat famous in Rhode Island area and there is a lot of known information.  I think I can fill in one of the lines that is missing.  Hopefully what I add will be sufficient!
