Just started on this genealogy life story (and getting quite addicted). smiley

Looking for any information about the Brabander family (parts of which apparently used the 'de Brabander' or 'de Braband' in the Birkenhead area from at least 1895.

You have the luxury of an unusual surname which makes things somewhat easier!

Here are Michael's parents:

Marriages Sep 1890

Brabander Charles Joseph Birkenhead 8a 871

Taggart Ellen Catherine Birkenhead 8a 871

The 1891 census shows them living with Charles' father Francis aged 57, widower, a rigger (meaning ship's rigging for sails I believe) and born in Belgium.

"England and Wales Census, 1891," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:4SR7-6W2 : 11 December 2017), Francis Brabander in household of Charles Brabander, Birkenhead, Cheshire, England; from "1891 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast(http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO RG 12, Cheshire county, subdistrict, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey

Charles' birth was recorded in Q3 1869 in Birkenhead but misspelled as BREBANDER. His mother's maiden name was Bridget RYAN.

Thank you Frank.  New to this Family Tree Research, and getting a little overwhelmed by all the sources, both paid and unpaid.  Already found two family 'traditional stories' that have proved to be urban myths, much to a surviving aunties' indignation.

de Brabander sounds as a dutch name to me. it means someone coming from Brabant/inhabitant of Brabant. And Brabant is a region in the south of the Netherlands and the North of Belgium. Maybe you will find a connection to that part of the world.

Eef, This is my family's oral tradition but at this stage, I have no idea how  far back.  I suspect that the de Braband (or de Brabant) was the original surname. The 'er' got added to the end somewhere, and then at some stage the 'de' got dropped. The 'er' and the 'de' actually mean the same thing - 'of Brabant', so it makes sense. However, working through sources, when people were not as careful on paperwork is fun. I'll just go where the trail leads. wink
