There are several August Gerlach names around that year in Prussia.  Did he come to the US?  That would be an important clue as to which one it is.

I am also looking for August Gerlach. My information indicates he may have been born as early as 1830, but not sure. He had a son names Edward (or other spelling) who was born 12 Aug 1862, and his son came to the US, but I don't think my August Gerlach did. I show a spouse named Winnie or Whilemena or something similar.

An ancestry.com public tree shows Edward Gerlach born 12 Aug 1862 from Prussia married to Phebe Ann Honeywell born in Iowa on 05 SEP 1867.  They had a daughter named Winifred Elizabeth "Winnie" Gerlach, born on 26 Dec 1893 in Williamstown, Chickasaw, Iowa.  Edward's parents' names are not known, however.  There are several public family trees that list the same information...no information at all on parents of Edward.

There are several August Gerlach's mentioned in the public family trees, but none meeting all your information. One was born 21 Jan 1830 in Feuerbach, Germany and had a son named William E. Gerlach, but William E. was born in Nebraska in 1878. Another August born in Prussia with a wife Wilhelmina Aust but no child with the name Edward or version of it.  Neither do the other August Gerlach names show a child named Edward.

Family Search: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/MWMF-GTZ shows:

August Ferdinand GERLACH born 25 March 1849 in Heiligenbeil, East Prussia, spouse Wilhelmine Caroline Scharfschwerdt, born 2 August 1847, married 25 Nov 1873.  They had a son but not an Edward.

They also show a Carl Freidrich August Gerlach born about 1833 married to Henrietta Wilhelmine Vetter and two female children, no Edward.

Shows a Heinrich August Gerlach  (1840-1912) married to Lina Wilhelmine Louise Hirsch (born 1848).  Again no mention of a child with the name Edward.

Such are the joys of genealogy!  Hope you can get it narrowed down.

Thank you so much for all this information. Edward Gerlach is my great grandfather, and Winnie, his daughter is my grandmother. My father did geneology and in his materials he showed Edward Gerlach as being from New Campenau, East Prussia, now, apparently Kepniewo, Poland.

Edward's parents were August Gerlach, born ca. 1840 (or perhaps a little earlier) and Winnemina Streimer. I think her first name may have been Wilhelmine.

I don't know for sure that Edward is the only "first name." It may be he is Edward, August Gerlach, or another combination. Same goes for his father, August.

Edward Gerlach was born 12 August 1862 and died 29 December 1938 in Iowa.  He sailed to America when he was in his late teen years.

His family in Germany has been almost impossible to find, but I certainly do appreciate your reply to my question.  Cynthia
August Gerlach did not come to America,  and because his son came at such an early age, about 16, I have wondered if August was killed in a war in the 1870's, as there was alot of battles going on in Germany/Prussia during that time.

Also, I recently found a photography of Edward Gerlach's sister, who remained in Germany. Unfortunately, her name is not present on the front or back of the photo.
Sorry I was so long out of touch. August Gerlach, as far as I know, did not come to the US. His son Edward came in about 1889. I suspect August may have died in a war or similar maybe about 1871. I am not certain, but I know Edward had a sister, because I have a photograph of her. unfortunately, she is only identified on the back as "Edward's Sister in Germany."

I am still trying to find Edward's parents, August and Wilhelmina (Striemer) Gerlach.
