Eliza, and her first husband, Mr. Green (Charles Green’s son), and their 8 children, met James Willis and family when both families were enroute to the US. Mr. Green became ill, died, and was buried at sea. Not long after arrival in the US, Jane Willis became ill and died. James Willis married his second wife, Eliza Green. In spite of his age, James and Eliza had 4 sons, James, George, Henry, and Albert. Four of the eight Green children were: 2 daughters, Mrs. Thomas Underwood and Mrs. Charles Hill, and 2 sons, William Green and John Green.

I've got a possible Charles Green on in 1841 census in Cheltenham with wife Susan and some children.  The registration district of Cheltenham Union is the same district William Green/Eliza Hill's children were registered in:

1841 Census

Susan/Susannah died in 1848 Death ref

Charles and the two younger children on the 1851 census, birthplace Didbrook which comes under Cheltenham.  He's listed as a carpenter, not a stone mason though...

1851 Census

This Charles is not on the 1861 census which would tally with the death you have in 1854.  Your profile for Charles has references for his burial on Jan 7th 1854 in Cheltenham, but also his death in July 1854 in Lincolnshire... is that second one a red herring?

Death date very uncertain still. We know the marriage record of his son William Green and Elizabeth Hill is 100% showing the father Charles Green as a stone Mason her father was also a brick layer the address is hard to read but the door numbers are showing they were neighbors. So the boy meets the girL next door scenerio. The marriage record shows William Green and Elizabeth Hill as “Minors” also he is listed as bachelor and she is listed as “spinster”

I update the death date category as still unknown date of death and we now know it’s rhe 1802 Charles Green
Charles Green’s father’s name was Charles Green and mother Ann so maybe the 1841 is his parents

There are two Charles Green's born in Didbrook, one was chr on 2 SEP 1798 to Thomas and Elizabeth Green (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JMCB-V8V).
The second was chr on 20 JUNE 1802 to Charles and Ann Green (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW48-KQR)

Likely Thomas and Charles are related.

Looking at the death reference you have it would seem to point to Charles in 1798, the census info I found seems to point to Charles in 1802.  At the end of the day you don't know if either of these chaps are the right one, or if the info you currently have is correct!  But hopefully it's a start.

1802 Charles seems to match with the 1851 England census showing his age to be 50 which would match
Their son William Green who married Elizabeth Hill died at sea do we have a date of his death? Or a estimate. Maybe a date of marriage of her second husband James Willis ?

OK - I think I've found your Charles Green - Stonemason on the 1851 census, born in Leckhampton.  He's in the workhouse, listed as 50 yrs old.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGK2-WLJ

And Jane Green, maiden name Watson, listed as Stone Mason's wife from Leckhampton on teh 1851 census. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGKL-ZHH

William Watson Green was baptized to Charles and Jane Green, but I can't see the full record to see the date or location.  It's on Ancestry in the Gloucestershire Baptism records.

This is an excellent image and source. Middle name we had wrong seems to be Watson. Same as maiden name of mother ! I added a bunch of new info in the question responses. Thank you for this record

The key is the address once again Nauton Fields!!!
I don’t have a current membership to view the record but can be viewed if you provide the share link.
Paul, thanks for that, the notation on the baptism is interesting!  I also noticed that the wedding of Jane Watson and Charles Green is on Ancestry, if you have some time, could you do the sharing thing on the record again?  Thanks.

Here is the image of the marriage record for Charles Green and Jane Watson/Watts:https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/15745819?h=0efc3f

Thanks Paul.  No parent info for Charles, but it does look like Jane has a sister, Ann, who was a witness.

Andrew - Jane Green was enumerated twice in the 1841 census, once at home with the rest of her children (but Charles must have still been working away), and once with her parents in Eyford.

At home in Leckhampton

With her parents Robert & Sarah in Eyford.

Hi,

I am a descendant of Charles Green b1801 stone mason of Leckhampton so am reading this with curiosity. I am struggling to connect this family with sources to the US. The Eliza Green / Willis in Chateaugay NY has a different dob and the Jesse is a girl whereas the Leckhampton Jesse is a boy. I’ve seen there are a few public trees repeating the US emigration pattern but I can’t see how the sources, where there are any cited, definitely point to the Leckhampton Greens... Help anyone?

Thanks,

claire

I’ll look at it. I’m direct through William Charles Green  and Evalina Nora Barrett

Hello! Just reading the above notes as I'm just looking at this family and I can help confirm.

I have been working on the DNA matches of my Husband and he is descended through Priscilla Watson the sister of Jane Watson.

He is also related through DNA to the descendants of Eliza and William who travel to America.

Hope this helps - Donna.
There is a Charles Green born at Nauton which I think is more likely to be the Charles of this line than the one born at Didcot.
Hello!  Thanks so much for replying, it's brilliant to hear from you.  I took a DNA test recently and have now seen that I do have matches to the Chateaugay branch of this family - so they really did emigrate!  I am amazed by this.  Good to hear that another descendent also has matches.  I wonder if I am a match for your husband?  I took the Ancestry DNA test and I also have a public tree on there too you can take a look at.  I think my username is just my name Claire Devlin Connolly.  Are you and your husband on Ancestry?  Yes Charles Green is the one from Naunton Fields.  I thought it was interesting that Jane has William Watson Green baptised at Eyford where she is temporarily living bcak with her father while Charles is at Naunton - I wonder why?  I also couldn't find Charles later on the 1841 census but then I found him at Bath Hospital being treated for paralysis.  I'd love to find out what happened to William Watson Green as some others think he died at sea during the crossing but I can't find any records to support this.  Him and Eliza have a couple more children with surname Green in America.  I have no idea when or how he died.  All the best, Claire.
