CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Good afternoon everyone from sunny New Zealand

It’s been another warm week with no sign of rain. The forest fire around Nelson appears to be contained though there are still flare ups. The community support for evacuees has been amazing and the residents in and around Wakefield have been allowed back home, at least temporarily.

WikiTree-wise, I have been working through the aunts, uncles and cousins of my great grandmother. She was born shortly after her parents and siblings arrived in NZ in 1875. I’ve been reflecting on her mother who must have undertaken that voyage heavily pregnant. She also lost a son at sea, which must have added to her woes. The family came from a tiny Lincolnshire village, and it’s fascinating to see both the cross-generational family connections and the movement away from there towards work, both within England and overseas.

Thanks for hosting the chat, Dorothy.

I read that the fire fighters saved the Carter Holt Harvey sawmill near there,or Teapot Valley Road.... are you within that area??  Hope everyone is returned safely and still able to reside in their homes

The fire fighters have done an amazing job, Dorothy, both in protecting a number of sawmills, employing hundreds of people and in protecting property and stock (animals). I live about 25 miles away so have been very aware of what is happening.
So glad the fire is under control now and that people are able to return to their homes. That had to horrible for all of you. We had a forest fire near here a couple of years ago and, though we were in no danger of the fire reaching our home, the smoke in the atmosphere was terrible for weeks.

Yes, our ancestors did endure much to strike out on long voyages to what they hoped would be a better life for them and their families. I'm sure they were excited and apprehensive at the same time.
Mist happy to hear that the fire is under control.

             "Honoring our U.S. Presidents"

Presidents Day is a federal holiday in the United States, that is observed on the third Monday in February; which is this coming Monday!  "Presidents Day", which went into effect in 1971, started out to to honor the birthdays of both George Washington whose birthday is February 22nd, and Abraham Lincoln. whose birthday is February 12th.

This day however is now set aside, by more and more of America’s population, to honor all of the past United States Presidents that have served our country.  It is celebrated with public ceremonies in Washington, D.C. and throughout the United States.

So I thought I would do a little quiz to see how many questions you can answer correctly below:

1. Who was the President who lost all the White House china gambling? Ans: Warren Harding

2. Which President got up at 5 am every morning to practice the piano for two hours? Ans: Harry Truman

3. Which president refused an honorary degree from Oxford University  because he felt he had "neither literary nor scientific attainment"?  Ans: Millard Filmore

4. Which President served the shortest presidency dying just 32 days after he was elected?  Ans: William Harrison

5. Who gave his 3, 319 word inaugural address from memory? Ans:  Franklin Pierce

6. Who was the only President who never married?  Ans: James Buchanan

7. Which President became the youngest pilot in the Navy at age 19 and survived four plane crashes during WWII?  Ans: George H.W. Bush Sr.

8. Who was the only President employed s a Yellowstone Park Ranger? Ans: Gerald Ford

9. Which President collected "Spider-man" and "Conan the Barbarian" comic Books? Ans: Barack Obama

10. Who taught school in Texas before becoming a politician and President? Ans:  Lyndon B Johnson

#4 is William Harrison. How do I know? Welll....A show in the '90s called Animaniacs did a Presidents song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc3xTj3g9QQ

They also did the countries of the world.

Animaniacs. Great show for kids with humor adults can enjoy. So many jokes flew over the kids' heads. So many.

As for the rest?

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Valentine Day Weekend Chat.

Well this week was a good one for all of us. My mom said that she wasn't happy with how they were taking care of my dad at the memory care unit at Brookdale in Greenville, Tennessee. That she was thinking about taking him out of there for good. But at christmas time when she had him at her house for about 5 days including Christmas Day that the next time she would do that will be at Valentine Day but she didn't because right now she finally admitted that she can't take care of him there and she might not ever again it just depends on my dad. My dad this week has been alert and responsive and has even talked more than he did since when he wasn't responsive. He now gets up from a chair or his bed on his on and even today used his walker and walked for his meal to the dining room in the memory care unit and back also and he can feed himself but my mom helps him for lunch and supper time. He even started back singing with us like he did before he got unresponsive. So he doing better again in those aspect. Mom told me and my sister when we went to see them there on Valentine Day night that one time when I wasn't there he called out my name but mother didn't tell why he called my name out but that made me feel good about him now. I even when me and mother went to eat out Saturday February 16th I met her at Brookdale and so my dad also and he seemed to do pretty good. He got up out of the chair in the dining room there and stood up straight by himself and walked by to his chair in his room. I am happy with his progress since he has vascular dementia, congestion in the chest, even had to have his fiscula moved to the other arm and taking dialysis 3 times a week and has two types of cancer inside of him also.

Also me and my sister had joined for $20 a year the Jonesbourgh, Tennessee senior citizen center. I go on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and do silver sneakers circuit on those mornings. Then on Tuesday I work out in that morning in the fitness center and then on Thursday morning from 9:30 till 12:00 I do rotorgraphic cards and then after that for an hour I work out in the fitness center. Then on Monday thru Wednesday and Friday I eat lunch there that they fix and you can pay just $2 for a good lunch. My sister has every other Friday off so we both go to the silver sneakers circuit class and then have lunch there together. We joined that center in January but last three weeks we were health wise and weather wise be able to do that. Then on the weekends we go see my dad and mom and get groceries if we need to get groceries or anything else. I go to my sister church with her and my brother - in - law on Sundays. So I am getting out more since the weather is getting better and we are getting better health wise also. I can see the river at my house and my sister house from the front porches and from rooms in the front of the houses to. We are not that far from the Nolichucky river and our road is off of Highway 107 in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

I also offer to go over to my mom house on Monday morning and help her do some things before she has to go help feed around 11:00 on Monday morning to feed lunch to Dad. I will get to my mother by 9:00 on Monday morning that was the agreement. Since the senior citizen center is closed on Monday because of President Day holiday.

Thank you for your updates Linda, glad you got to go out to eat and things settled down a bit during Valentine's week.
I'm glad y'all had a better week. It's so difficult dealing with what you all have going on with your parents. I'm sure your mother appreciates the help you give her. Glad you are taking care of yourself by doing Silver Sneakers and spending time at the Senior Center. Take care!

Cool! I keep a list of the birds I have seen by type, it's been a couple years since a new species was spotted, the most beautiful was a indigo bunting. My maternal Grandfather loved cardinals, red birds he would call them. So I always think of him when I see one, which is often!
I definitely heard a Steller's jay this morning, but I couldn't see it.

I miss cardinals from my midwestern days.  It's always a pleasure to see them (and fireflies) when I visit family in Illinois.  No roadrunners in Decatur, though.  smiley

Saw a magpie and a hawk of some type. I didn't get a good look at it but probably red-tailed.
