Advice before editing this pre-1700 Lake profile? [1]

I have information to contribute to the profile of Ann (Lake) Stillwell. This is what I can add:

The birth year was listed as 1694.

These are the sources I am using:

  • Descendants of Nicholas Stillwell document

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

Marion, at Ann's spouse's Stillwell-1175 profile, you mention, list, and describe several sources, but you haven't given enough information to allow another researcher to find these sources, evaluate them, or advise you on their merits.

If an item is a published book, please include the author, title, and publication details in the citation. If you found it on the internet, indicate where. If it's only available in your personal collection, say so. Etc. See the Help pages on Sources. Also, if you haven't yet perused the new pages on Reliable Sources for Pre-1700, please do so.

Thank you, Ellen for taking time to help me improve sources. I have added the information you suggested to Ann Lake's profile, as well as Stillwell-1175. Briefly, one source came from the internet, but unfortunately, I did not indicate where and will have to search for it again. When I have more information, I can update the source citations. Another source is Hetty Stillwell Lee's history and genealogy document, of which I have two copies, both on the mainland. Now I am on Maui working from copies of some of the pages. Other copies of the document may be extant among other descendants of Nicholas Stillwell-18 but the Stillwell Family Reunions, at which they were distributed, ended before I was born and I do not know any cousin who  may have another copy. Circumstantial evidence hints that Hetty Stillwell Lee may have died in or after 1950, after which the reunions were discontinued.

I will take your advice and check out the new pages on sources. Thank you again for your help with this.

Goodness knows, all of us have been known to omit vital details when we thought we wrote down  our sources -- and of course we don't remember near as well as we expected we would! (Good luck finding yours...)

Looking around WikiTree, I see that a lot of the content about the Stillwell family (and their relations) is marginally sourced. Maybe some poking around will turn up good scholarly content about the family hiding behind a paywall somewhere.

I didn't post links to the new source pages when I wrote that reply earlier (because I was typing from my phone and G2G won't let me copy and paste from my Android phone). The New Netherland reliable sources page is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Netherland_Settlers_Project_Reliable_Sources and other projects' pages are findable at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Reliable_Sources_for_Pre-1700_Profiles .
Thank you, Ellen. I note that you have updated the Reliable Sources page for the New Netherland Settlers Project on Valentine's Day. Most of us would agree that considerable confusion surrounds many Stillwell genealogies and sources, to say nothing of profiles. Unfortunately, sources do not always agree on what should be basic details. It is also difficult to obtain the best sources, which may be out of print. I have been looking for Stillwell sources on the internet to try to identify where my sources and others originated. The results are a work in progress, compiled in an ever-increasing file called "Stillwell Family Info Sources." Plans are to comment on reliability of sources in the document and if they do not have good data, to indicate known problems.

If you or anyone else wants to see it, none of my work here is secret. Anyone can have it upon request. I also have a query on the with a Pre-1700 tag to try to identify a WikiTree genealogist who has a copy of Dr. John Stilwell's book vol. 3, published in 1929, and who may be able to help me with error identification.
