Thomas Brown Y-DNA

Has anyone here done Y-DNA testing on the line of Thomas Brown, immigrant from England during the Puritan Great Migration? I do find one test in the ungrouped category in the Brown-Browne-Braun Project at FTDNA that is R-CTS4065. I'm guessing that's from a SNP test and not the BigY. He has so many descendants I'm a little surprised there hasn't been more done.I thought I'd do a little fishing here to see what anyone knows.

Morning Jane,

Abby Glann works with Browns quite a bit as well as the Brown Name study here on WikiTree. She may have information on DNA and the Brown surname.

Hi Jane,

A Y test for my brother or uncle is on my to-do list but hasn't happened yet :-) What I do know is that my Browns aren't linked, at least not recently in the least, to any other Browns I've encountered via autosomal DNA so far. It will be interesting to see what I find out with the Y test once I get it done. There are a few posts on my Brown Name study page and those folks may have done one. Otherwise, feel free to add a DNA section there to keep notes on what you've encountered so far! I am sure eventually it'd be great to have something rivaling the Smith ONS/DNA studies, but I haven't had much time to put into it so far.

Thank you for your reply! I'll go look around at your links and see if I can constructively add to your study page. I imagine you are not connected to the Thomas mentioned above because I do have autosomal matches that correlate with a paper trail. A lot of them, in fact, but unfortunately no living male Browns who would be test candidates.

Is this Brown-84740 the same Thomas Brown?

by Virginia Emerson G2G5 (5.7k points)
I'm afraid I don't know how to look up a profile by its ID. Can you help me with that?
Go to drop down above “Find”, click “Search”, then item #3 search by ID number enter Brown-84740, then search.
Well, I couldn't get that to work, which I am sure is my fault. I love WikiTree but still find so many things about it baffling. Anyway, I did find him through other methods and no, he is not at all the same person. The profile I reference is for Thomas b. 1628. Yours is b. 1740.

Jane,

I'm descended from Thomas Browne (John, Ichabod, Stephen, Abel, John Martin, George, Willis, Roy, Rod). Thomas Browne's DNA is on FamilyTreeDNA under the Brown-Browne-Braun DNA Study.  See Group 021, kit 778063.  It's not my DNA profile, but matches quite well to my 2nd cousin, who had his DNA tested some years back.

Doug,

Thank you for the tip. I think I may have found that back when I originally posted. I am surprised that despite how prolific this family is there have only been 7 DNA tests and only your cousin has done SNP testing. Goes to show how sparse actual DNA testing is in the general population!

Jane
It's surprising to me as well.  My 2nd cousin's wife called me all excited when she first found the match (she's heavily into the DNA science) because it had the earliest ancestor listed as Nicholas, not Thomas.  Within two days of my finding it, the poster had changed that to Thomas.  I think he must have made the same mistake so many of Thomas' ancestors have in linking the two as father-son.  I just hope one day one of Nicholas's male descendants will get tested and we end this 100 year old debate.
I hope so, too! DNA can yield amazing results when all hope of finding information through traditional routes fails.
