Change of LNAB at Paul von Hindenburg?

+9 votes
Tonight I'm adding family to Paul von Hindenburg, one of the German Heads of State between the two World Wars. I had a look on his wikipedia entry and there his name is cited as "Paul.... von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg". When I click on the wikipedia-entry of his complete surname, it links to "name of a noble lineage that originated at the start of the 19th century." (Translated from the German Wikipedia-entry about that lineage.) These were originally 2 lineages that were related. It was unified when "a Colonel von Hindenburg who stayed childless, installed his nephew Johann Otto Gottfried von Beneckendorff as heir of his manors Limbsee and Neudeck." The uncle wanted that J.O.G. changed his name to "von Hindenburg", he didn't want to let go the "von Beneckendorff", so added the new part to his old name.

This Johann Otto Gottfried von Beneckendorff (und von Hindenburg) is the great grandfather of Paul von Hindenburg. So this double named lineage existed when Paul was born. That's why I think the LNAB should be changed to "von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg" instead of writing "von Beneckendorff" in the other names field.

Edit: I added also the euroaristo tag to get that question also to people who have a bit of nobility knowledge

That makes perfectly good sense to me, but I, of course, would defer to more knowledgeable members. You’ve tackled a good family to work on, Jelena.

Kylie, I need your help! I wanted to edit the LNAB of Hindenburg to "von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg" but I cannot do it. Seems a leader has to do it.
Not a problem, I will speak to Maggie, and get that sorted out for you. I am learning as I go with these kinds of things. Thank you for bearing with me :)
I've removed the PPP from the profile, but I think you are still going to have to contact the Notables Project for them to either change the name or give you access.
Exactly. I could add his family because I have the German Roots Badge even though he was protected (I suppose it was because of that), but I (still) cannot change his LNAB.
Thanks, Jelena.

John, thanks for looking at it. I can change the LNAB but rather have the Notable project check it first.

I have made the requested name change, however, I want to be clear that we really really need to properly document the profile BEFORE we make these sorts of changes. I am generally hesitant to make these sorts of changes where in essence we're the ones "leading the way" to contradicting Wikipedia, Wikimedia, and all others who support this documentation on the internet. However, the change has been done and at this time, there's nothing on the profile to support the name change. Please provide proof in the biography to support the name change as soon as is reasonably possible so that anyone who may question such a change can feel satisfied that the appropriate research was completed.

Slight correction - I see where Wikipedia supports the LNAB, so not as awkward as it could be, but we should still have at least a comment in the biography to support this name. Thanks.
The name on wikipedia is on the German AND on the English page of Hindenburg in the now corrected version of the LNAB. And the link to the explanation of how the surname originated was taken from the link on the German wikipedia page.

Scott, you have to be aware that people who know several languages can also source profiles with sources from different languages. I said above that the explanation about the new LNAB is a translation of the German wikipedia entry about that lineage.
I understand, but I also know that if I wasn't certain of the name change that others will question it as well. So it's always better to document the profile before we make the changes so that there's no misunderstanding. That's all I'm trying to make sure happens.
