Shared Photo: Illumination of Descendants of Peleg Slocum and Ann Dyer

I wanted to share this family photo of John Slocum with the community. Location: Usquepaugh, Richmond, Rhode Island. Date: 2016.

There is a state park here in Pennsylvania named Frances Slocum State Park. Frances was the daughter of Jonathan and Ruth (Tripp) Slocum. She was born some time around 1773. This family were Quakers and they were pacifists and moved to Pennsylvania in 1777. When Francis was about 5 years old, she was kidnapped by 3 native Americans warriors. She was given to a couple that had lost their young child and they raised her as their own. She married and was abused in her first marriage and returned home to the Delaware tribe and married again. They lived happily ever after except that she never did see her parents again. I believe she was happy with her life with the Delaware tribe.

The Slocums you mention and the Slocums who are my ancestors in my artwork have common ancestors. Giles Slocum was among those in Newport who had split off from Anne Hutchinson's group- he is mentioned as renting land on Anne's son Edward's land in North Kingstown, RI in Edward Hutchinson's will.  The Hutchinson's and Dyer's children (my ancestors) married and then their children married into the Slocum's.

The family ancestry is fascinating to me. I am going to attempt to work on the profile of Frances Slocum. I am going to add as much of her history as I can because she was a local woman and I am familiar with her. It seems like her Bio does not have very much in it. I am sure the creator of her Bio did as well as they could but I have a bunch of information available. My wife likes the idea and Francis Slocum State park is our favorite place to go for a picnic or to even just sit on a park bench. We used to camp there quite a bit also. I did  some night fishing there and i did quite a bit of ice fishing and summer fishing there.

There is a good book written about Frances (Maconaquah) Slocum. Simply titled "Frances Slocum, the Lost Sister of Wyoming)...Wyoming, Pennsylvania. It is true that the 3 Native Americans involved in the killings were Delaware, however Frances was raised with the Miami Indians, where she was treated with much respect. She did much for the Miami, even petitioning Congress for their welfare. She was sucessful in securing a square mile of land in Indiana. Much in the area is named for her. Her brothers went to look for her after many years, finding her living in or around Peru, Ind. She spoke very little English.The book was written by John Franklin Meginness. I thought it was a good read.

Fittingly to what we do here, Peleg was a descendant of Noah and an ancestor to the Israelites. I remember this from Sunday school when I was much younger. In church I told my mother his name was Peg-leg and he hobbled when he walked around. When we got home from church my mother very lovingly but quite sternly corrected my errant joke. I had chores galore for the rest of the day. I would not dare say that God rested on the seventh day. One smarty pants joke in one day was enough. A lesson well learned.

Oh, sorry, but that’s funny! I remember well those years where a misstep at church meant a “meeting” at home. Pegleg, that’s great! Wish I’d thought of it. Would have been worth it!

It is amusing  and worth it now. But I had so many chores to do because of that misstep. I am so glad that my mother handled the situation so well. If I was older and if my father handled it I may have been on the receiving end of a size 14 EEE shoe. Now that would not have been amusing.  :o)
