But there's another connection - my great-grandmother worked at the Rough Riders Hotel (called the Metropolitan Hotel at the time) in Medora, North Dakota. This was in the 1880's when she was a teenager and a recent German immigrant. Teddy Roosevelt was spending a fair bit of time in the Medora area and gave a speech at the hotel, but I don't know if she saw him then. He had a ranch in the area, now part of the Teddy Roosevelt National Grasslands (locally called the Badlands, and every bit as impressive as the Badlands Nat'l Park of South Dakota, but in a different way).
