Question

The Quakers Project exists to bring together WikiTreers interested in the Religious Society of Friends - the Quakers.

Quaker research can be a very rewarding to work with because they kept meticulous records and generally married within the community. 

Project members work to identify repositories and other sources for Quaker records, manage profiles for historically significant Quakers, and link individuals with Meetings to which they belonged.

Would one of the Valentine Hollingsworth's in this line be your husband's ancestor? https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Hollingsworth-Family-Tree-1765 If so, you may not have to add many profiles. The Quaker Hollingsworth lineage is extensive and you should be able to find the right connection pretty easily. Let me know if you need help. I have a letter from a DAR Quilt researcher regarding a Hannah Thomas Chrisman or a Hannah Thomas Chrisman Lee. It is a long letter, detailing research that has already been done to find the maker of a quilt which is in the DAR museum. The writer, Deborah Cooney, has given me permission to share her letter, as for some reason, I had entered the initial profile for Hannah Thomas Chrisman. (Chrisman-471) while I was searching for my own Thomas ancestors, but had only entered details from the grave memorial. 

Are there any researchers in the Quaker Project who would like to take this on, or who could help me direct Deborah Cooney? 

A partial excerpt from her letter defines the issue:

I am a quilt researcher at the DAR Museum in Washington, DC.
A quilt in our collection with the initials HTC and date 1833 is the subject of new research.   I have discovered that the likely maker is either Hannah Thomas Chrisman or Hannah Thomas Chrisman Lee.  All of the Quaker records I've seen have the older Hannah dying in 1816, well before the quilt's date.  As you have noted, Find a Grave puts the birth dates of two of her children as 1822 (Rebecca) and 1824 (Hannah), meaning she lived at least until 1824.  Isaac was born to the Isaac's second wife 11 years later, leaving a large gap. 

If the older Hannah lived until 1833, the initials on the quilt would be hers.  Young Hannah would have been nine years old in 1833; quiltmakers that young are possible if they had help.  If any more information surfaces on the death date of the elder Hannah, I would be grateful to have it for our narrative on the background of this quilt.

and my conclusions about the maker:
 

The donors of the Diamond Square quilt were collectors, so no family provenance accompanied the quilt.  A woven tape attached to the quilt has a typed inscription:  "Made in 1833/owned by/Mrs. C.E. Hedden."   Handwritten notes in the file (unidentified author) state that the last family owner was Martha Lee Swain, born 1890s, of Bucks County, Pa.  Her ancestors were said to be member of the Chandler and Lee families of Berks County, Pa., and Tuckertown, N.J.    Martha was said to the great-granddaughter of Martha Lee of Tuckertown, N.J., born in the 1790s, and that both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey branches of the family were Quakers.

I found the original Exeter MM record book on Ancestry and can confirm she was the daughter of his second wife; Hannah senior clearly died in 1816. I will add everything to the profiles involved or I can send you my notes if you want to do it. :)

The question is now: if she died in 1816, then should neither of the two daughters be attributed to her?

I would love to join the Quaker project. I have two surnames in my descendents that were Quaker's Shinn and Lippincott's from New Jersey and Virginia which is now West Virginia. I would like to learn more about all of the Quakers that came to America.

My bunch of greats grandfather, William Read, may have married a Lippincott. He lived in New Jersey. He was born in Scotland around 1752, and came to America in his teens. He served as a blacksmith or farrier in the Rev. war. His wife's first name was Jerusha, her last name unknown, but Lippincott is one of the possibilities I've heard. He moved his family to Ohio, after receiving a land grant there. Went back to New Jersey to close out his business and allegedly died in a fire. His wife did not remarry, and stayed in Ohio with their 4 children. I don't believe that he was Quaker, more likely Presbyterian, but that doesn't mean that his wife wasn't Quaker.

I'd like to join the Quakers project.  I have Quaker ancestry in Dutchess County, NY and back to Long Island.  Have a copy of Hinshaw NY Quaker records, plus the John Bowne genealogy, and can do lookups.  My wife has Kelley Quaker ancestry originating on Cape Cod.

Hello, most of my English Quaker line lived in Makefield, Bucks Co, PA.  and Columbiana, Ohio. The surnames include: Palmer, Clowes, Gore, Whitacre, Ormiston, Hayes, Whitacre, Pownall (same family of Pownall related to Zoey and Emily Deschanel), Hulme and Joses. Ancestry.com has a lot of Quaker meeting house records. I am very proud of my Auaker ancestry. :-)

I'd love to join the project. My great-grandfather was Bertram Hope, b 1876 in Philadelphia. DNA and paper records say his dad was a Mattock, but his mother was Elizabeth Hope. Her father was John Hope of Philadelphia, b about 1814, one record only says Chester County. My mom and great-uncle have DNA matches to a large number of Quaker lines in Chester County--Hope, Harlan and Boone. The common ancestral couple appears to be Thomas Hope III (b 1738) and Sarah Harlan, last seen about to be dismissed from the Quaker meetings. We also have DNA links to the Presbyterian Hopes but not as clearly defined as the Quaker lines.

Gary Williams ... I would like to join this project.  My many great grandfathers William Isaac Williams Sr and Jr were Quakers and immigrated from Wales to the Welsh community in Chester, PA then moved to the Wythe, VA area prior to the Revolutionary War.  William Williams Jr is listed on the Flower Swift militia rolls and was disfellowshipped by the Quakers for taking up arms.

I am interested in participating in the Quaker project in the UK. My wife's ancestor, Cuthbert Wigham, hailed from Coanwood, Northumberland, where he created a friends meeting house in 1706. I would like to discover more about the Wighams of Northumberland, and their involvement in the Quaker religion. I am also keen to learn more about the Quakers in the UK.

Hi Debbie, thanks for adding me to the group. I am looking forward to learning something new, and have already learnt how the English Quakers didn't follow the dating convention of the Gregorian calender. This is no small discovery! It just shows that one is never to old to learn.

Knowing about those dates is so important to help resolve discrepancies on potential duplicate profiles. Did the information you were reading include the Julian/Gregorian month differences? I really like the chart on this page by the USGenWeb for Guilford County.

Hello Debi, the 1706 date does not take the Gregorian/Julian differences into account. The account of how the establishment of the Coanwood Friends Meeting House came about is contained in a publication that I will find, and will add to the Project.

I would like to join the Quaker Project, my great grandparents William Stewart Cole and Elizabeth Amelia McEwan were Quakers married in the Nile Street meeting house Sunderland 13 May 1886.  After several years in Belfast they emigrated to NSW Australia.  Although I have most of the documented facts about this family I would like to learn more about the Quaker religion as my grandfather (William and Elizabeth's eldest son) left the faith when he married.

I would like to join the Quaker Project.  One portion of my ancestors were involved in multiple Meetings in New York, including: Oblong, Nine Partners, Easton and Queensbury.  My second great grandfather, Jonathan Brown (Brown-72413) even tried to start a new Meeting at Luzerne but it only lasted a little over one year.

I would like to be part of this project. My g-g-grandparents, Joseph Tuttle (or Tuthill) and Mary (Bertine) Coleman were given a bible (now in my possession) by the "friends and patrons of Deuel Hollow Sabbath School" on Dec 25th, 1883, in the town of Dover NY. I have tried to find more information about the school/meeting house, but have not turned up much of anything. I have explored the area and found the Deuel Hollow Rd runs into Quaker Hill Rd, but there is no marker indicating the exact locaction of the school, other than a small cemetery and foundation. I have a list of the patrons if anyone is interested.

Multiple branches of my husband's family were Quakers, beginning with the Comptons and the Millhouses, but we have documents multiple other members from New Jersey, North and South Carlina, and Ohio.

I have some information in a book that was written about Benjamin Townsons life involving the Quaker movement in Liverpool.

I would join the Quakers project. My father had some Quaker ancestors. His great-great grandparents were Stephen Mosher and Ruth (Smith) Mosher. They lived in Morrow co., Ohio, and had a station on the underground railroad. They later moved to Iowa. They were both from New York, originally.

Hi Everyone,

I would love to join the Quaker project as a number of my ancestors were Quakers in the 1600's in Ireland , specifically the Abbotts', Jacksons' and Greens' and I got some records from the National Library of Ireland who hold copies of the Quaker Records for Ireland. As far as I know William Abbott with his daughter went to America in 1701 possibily my uncle so many times removed and he was a Quaker. Still have to fill in wikitree info regarding my Quaker heritage.

Hi Debi,

They have all the Quaker records including births, death's, marriages, those who left the society or had to and those who emigrated and the minutes of Quaker meetings. They sent me the Abbott and Green records for free on spreadsheet because it's a busy place they said if I could wait awhile they would see what they could find and they had the info out to me within a month, which was great. Obviously their very helpful people who work there.There is so much to do and so little time.
