The Quakers Project exists to bring together WikiTreers interested in the Religious Society of Friends - the Quakers.

Quaker research can be a very rewarding to work with because they kept meticulous records and generally married within the community.

Project members work to identify repositories and other sources for Quaker records, manage profiles for historically significant Quakers, and link individuals with Meetings to which they belonged.

If you would like to help build a collaborative environment for researching your Quaker ancestors, click the "answer" link below this question and use the answer box to tell us about your interests. We will award your badge and welcome you to the project.

Hi Carolyn. Would one of the Valentine Hollingsworth's in this line be your husband's ancestor? https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Hollingsworth-Family-Tree-1765 If so, you may not have to add many profiles. The Quaker Hollingsworth lineage is extensive and you should be able to find the right connection pretty easily. Let me know if you need help. If you would like to join the project, please look right underneath the opening post and click the word "answer," then tell us you want to join.

Hi Rhonda Zimmerman!  You mentioned in your post of an "Indiana Quakers page".   Do you have a link to this page?  I have many Quaker ancestors that settled in Indiana. Thank you.

I'm not Rhonda but the page she was referring to is the Quakers in Indiana free-space page.

I have a letter from a DAR Quilt researcher regarding a Hannah Thomas Chrisman or a Hannah Thomas Chrisman Lee. It is a long letter, detailing research that has already been done to find the maker of a quilt which is in the DAR museum. The writer, Deborah Cooney, has given me permission to share her letter, as for some reason, I had entered the initial profile for Hannah Thomas Chrisman. (Chrisman-471) while I was searching for my own Thomas ancestors, but had only entered details from the grave memorial.

Are there any researchers in the Quaker Project who would like to take this on, or who could help me direct Deborah Cooney?

A partial excerpt from her letter defines the issue:

I am a quilt researcher at the DAR Museum in Washington, DC.
A quilt in our collection with the initials HTC and date 1833 is the subject of new research. I have discovered that the likely maker is either Hannah Thomas Chrisman or Hannah Thomas Chrisman Lee. All of the Quaker records I've seen have the older Hannah dying in 1816, well before the quilt's date. As you have noted, Find a Grave puts the birth dates of two of her children as 1822 (Rebecca) and 1824 (Hannah), meaning she lived at least until 1824. Isaac was born to the Isaac's second wife 11 years later, leaving a large gap.

If the older Hannah lived until 1833, the initials on the quilt would be hers. Young Hannah would have been nine years old in 1833; quiltmakers that young are possible if they had help. If any more information surfaces on the death date of the elder Hannah, I would be grateful to have it for our narrative on the background of this quilt.

See the quilt in the Quilt Index file:
http://www.quiltindex.org/fulldisplay.php?kid=46-7A-15F

and my conclusions about the maker:

The donors of the Diamond Square quilt were collectors, so no family provenance accompanied the quilt. A woven tape attached to the quilt has a typed inscription: "Made in 1833/owned by/Mrs. C.E. Hedden." Handwritten notes in the file (unidentified author) state that the last family owner was Martha Lee Swain, born 1890s, of Bucks County, Pa. Her ancestors were said to be member of the Chandler and Lee families of Berks County, Pa., and Tuckertown, N.J. Martha was said to the great-granddaughter of Martha Lee of Tuckertown, N.J., born in the 1790s, and that both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey branches of the family were Quakers.
Please let me know if I should post the entire letter. There is quite a bit of research that has been done that members of the Quaker Project might find useful. Should I perhaps attach a free space to Hannah Thomas Chrisman's profile and post it there?
I think that would be a great idea, then you could add the link here so that everyone could see it. I've asked the members of the Project to reply here but they could also post comments on the free-space page.
Here is the link to the Free-Space Profile containing the entire letter written by Deborah Cooney, the DAR researcher;

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Hannah_Thomas_Chrisman%27s_Quilt&errcode=new_profile
I found the original Exeter MM record book on Ancestry and can confirm she was the daughter of his second wife; Hannah senior clearly died in 1816. I will add everything to the profiles involved or I can send you my notes if you want to do it. :)
Heather, please feel free to add from the Exeter records.
The question is now: if she died in 1816, then should neither of the two daughters be attributed to her?

I'm interested in joining. I have a 4xgreat grandfather who was remembered as a "very able preacher" for the Quakers, and many people from his line of the family also belonged to the Society of Friends.

We would love to have yo as part of the Quakers Project, Austin.  We like to include a little information about surnames & locations in the badge description. Would you share some more details so it can award your badge?
Some of the relevant surnames are Wooton, Hixon, and Stuart. They were scattered around the midwest, but most of my relatives were centered at the Yearly Meeting in West Elkton, OH.

Welcome to the Quakers Project, Austin. I have awarded your badge. Your next step will be to join the Google email list (link on the Project Page) where we do discuss how to improve Quaker profiles (among other things). My ancestor, Thomas Shield, was sentenced to 20 lashes for affiliating with Quakers in Northumberland County Virginia in the 1660s. He released his indentured servants early, he represented a prominent Quaker from London in a Virginia court. Yet he is "officially" Anglican. Closet Quaker?
by Glenn Major G2G1 (1.9k points)
Definitely a sympathizer. Did his descendants stay with the Anglican church or show up in Quaker records?
Thomas soon relocated across the Chesapeake Bay to more religiously tolerant Maryland. His grandson's relocated to more religiously tolerant Pennsylvania. But, no future Quaker associations.

I would like to join the Quaker project.  I have several family members in the  Earl, Benedict, Hull and Aldrich lineages with death dates and marriage dates missing that I’m hoping might be available through the group resources.  Acceptance into the group would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to have access to the Quaker Project expertise in order to prepare some of the profiles I manage, collaboratively, for inclusion in this category. Sometimes it takes a while to get to the next stage on Wiki - I've been working on Browne-440 for eight years and always thought it was part of the Penn Project in some way but now see it has flagged an Error - 923 code, which by the way, is and isn't a surprise. Anyways, we move ahead, and Browne-440 better fits with the Pre-1700 Quaker Category as Richard was born and died in England while his sons became prominent Pennsylvanian Quakers. I'd like to ask a Leader or Coordinator to take a look at the suggestion regarding badges and membership and let me know how to proceed please. There are other profiles but we can get to them in time. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Jenny
by Jennifer Mortimer G2G4 (4.7k points)
Sorry for the delay, Jenny, I was travelling. I took a look at your suggestions list to see the profiles with 9xx suggestions. There were two, Richard Browne and Moses Embree.

For Richard Browne, the suggestion was caused because of the profile is Project Protected (PPP) but doesn't have any project as a co-manager and doesn't have a Project Box. Looking at the Changes Log, it appears that the protection was put in place to make sure the spelling stayed as Browne. Because there have been numerous merges, I felt that it was best to leave him as PPP. I was also able to find an image of the Northamptonshire burial register at Ancestry, so I added a citation to that. I added the Quakers Project as a co-manager and added the project box.

For Moses Embree, the suggestion is being caused by there being a Project Box for the Quakers Project but the project isn't a co-manager. Since there doesn't appear to be any controversy with that profile and it has lots of co-managers, I don't thing the Quakers Project needs to help manage. Instead, change {{Quakers}} to {{Quakers_Sticker}}. That will change the project box to a sticker and fix the suggestion.

I hope this helps!
Thanks Debi, that was helpful and I've changed over to the sticker on Moses Embree. Is there cross-over on the Penn Quaker project?

As I research Quakers on both sides of the pond, perhaps I need to join both. Anyways, I would like to join the Quaker project regardless - please advise.

Jenny

Hello

I would like to join the Quaker Project.  I have been researching my lineage and found Quakers in Virginia.  Leftwich and Johnson so far.

I am looking to learn more and over the years I have found that collaboration in research in learning is preferable to trying to do it by oneself.

Thank You

I am interested in joining the Quaker project.  My Griffins lived in Flushing, New York in the 1700's  and were Quakers.  My Todhunter and Marke families of Bowscale, Cumberland, England were Quakers from about 1650 until the mid 1800's.

My Quaker ancestry begins with gateway ancestor, Capt. William Lawrence, of Flushing. One of three judges at The Flushing Remonstrance. His grandsons by Thomas Stevenson who married Elizabeth Lawrence, each marry daughters of Speaker Samuel Jenings. He's often given the honorific Governor, but he only used Lt. Governor. He is the primary signatory of the First Constitution of the Province of West New Jersey, in America, the 25th of the Ninth Month Called November, 1681. This predates Pennsylvania. He was Speaker of the New York & New Jersey Assemblies in 1707 & delivered the Remonstrance of Lord Cornbury. He died the following year. 'Samuel Smith's History of New Jersey, 1765. [Chp XVIII] Are there "spaces" for The Flushing Remonstrance & The Remonstrance of Lord Cornbury? Would you like spaces for those who are named, signatories, and/or in the room? Do I need pre-1700 badge?

I have published a 256 page book [SLFHL 929.273 V685v] that documents generation by generation, these, and other Pilgrim families. Recent information has set my task to republish the book as Peter Schmuck & Asenath Chapman, 1817-1837, Descendant by Whatsoever Surname. I'll be a Chapman Family Association member when the check clears. I can, and am, adding another 256 pages on Asenath's history, which leads to William Wentworth, The Elder. Another gateway ancestor and through the Blount descent, to Charlemagne. NYHBR 1882.  Through Sancha de Alaya to Rodrigo Diaz, El Cid. RD900, Gary Boyd Roberts, 2018. GPC. (my mom is a Col Thos Ligon descendant)

Welcome to the project, Chas. I've awarded your badge. Free Space pages for the two items you mentioned would be great. I took a look at the pages you have created for your family Bibles and it doesn't look like you'll have any questions on the process. If I'm wrong, give me a shout.

Hi Cynthia. If you would like to show your affiliation with the Quakers Project, you can add the Quakers Sticker to profiles, including your own. Here's the help page for the sticker. Let me know if you have any questions about that.

If you would like to be actively involved in the upkeep of profiles and pages for the Quakers Project, please make sure you are logged in first. Then add a new comment and I'll get your badge awarded. Thanks

Hello – I would like to join the Quakers Project. I have a long line of Quakers in my family who came from England (and settled mostly in Chester and Bucks Counties in Pennsylvania, with surnames Butler and Fisher). I have an extensive collection of support documentation in the form of Quaker meeting minutes, certificates of removal and admittance, etc. I am particularly interested in tracing my 6th great grandfather, John Butler (b. abt. 1704 in England; settled in Bucks County; died abt. 1782), who married Mary Fisher (b. 1711; died 1792), daughter of John Fisher (1678-1765) and Mary Hough (1684-1711). Thank you.

I have many lines of ancestors who were Quaker, most ended up in NJ. It skipped a few generations but I found myself at a Meeting one day several years back and am now a member. The Meeting I belong to was original made possible by my 6th great grandfather, Solomon Lippincott

I have been hovering on the fringes of this Project for over a year. I have researched the Quaker ancestry of the poet Laurence Binyon. I have Quaker connections of my own - mainly a 17th-18th century Ford(e) family of Cheshire and Staffordshire in England - which I would like to do more work on. In addition I am very interested in early Quaker history and early Quaker notables. Some of the first Quakers tie in with my role as a Project Coordinator of the Magna Carta Project. I am pre-1700 and pre-1500 certified.

Can we possibly find a more appropriate group of people who integrate collaboration with conscientious objectors and political activism par excellence! How to respectfully resist pressure without anger and violence. I saw it first hand as the Friends welcomed me when I was in high school in the 60s. I was there for 3 years until I graduated and went off to the West Coast. Even today, the thought of my interactions with these amazing people takes my breath away! To find out that there is a line in my Father's Pennsylvania family that takes me to Philadelphia and the early Quakers who later became the backbone (as I understand it) of the Underground Railroad. I am so thrilled that I could be a part of this! My family were the Lansberry/Lansburys and Youngs. He was a Waterman from Bordentown NJ who evetually taxied people up and down the riverway in Philadelphia.

I have quite a few Quaker ancestors on my mother's side and recently found out that there probably were some on my father's side, as well. About  5 years ago or so, I became a member of Mickleton Meeting in NJ, which was intially formed in the home of my 9XGrandfather, Solomon Lippincott.

Hello,

I would be very  interested in joining the Quaker project got the reasons below.   This is a fascinating part of my family and I would love to connect with others who share similar backgrounds and histories.

I have maternal ancestors who belonged to the Society of Friends. I am interested in finding out how far back their memberships went and being able to access the Friends’ records to solve some of my genealogy “mysteries”. :-)

Thank you so much!

Hello!

I'd be interested in joining the Quaker Project. My mom's maiden name was Earl and traces back to Ralph Earl and Joan Savage who came to Rhode Island from England. The Earls came to have considerable property and family in Worchester MA, giving, I believe, property for the Quaker cemetery there. I'd love to know more about their practice and also understand the branch of the family who moved to Vermont and fought in and made guns for the Revolutionary War. Thanks!
