The Quakers Project exists to bring together WikiTreers interested in the Religious Society of Friends - the Quakers.

Quaker research can be a very rewarding to work with because they kept meticulous records and generally married within the community.

Project members work to identify repositories and other sources for Quaker records, manage profiles for historically significant Quakers, and link individuals with Meetings to which they belonged.

If you would like to help build a collaborative environment for researching your Quaker ancestors, click the "answer" link below this question and use the answer box to tell us about your interests. We will award your badge and welcome you to the project.

Make sure you are logged in when you answer so that I will be able to find your profile any comments I make will be sent to your email. Sorry to be difficult, it's an administrative thing so that I will be able to talk back and forth with your personally.
Hello,  I too would love to be included on this Quaker's Project.  My Quaker lines start with my grandmother and I can trace back from the Hendricks  and Morgan County, Indiana Quaker families of Atkinson, Allen, Ward, Jones, Reddick, Vestal, Newlin, Hadley, Montgomery, Jessup, Lindley, Woody and others  tracing back to the Guilford County, North Carolina area (Guilford, Orange, Alamanace, Stokes,Chatham, etc.) on up to Pennsylvania .  Additionally, I have Isack Page and wife Damaris Shattuck who fled Salem, Massachusetts and settled in Pasquotank County, North Carolina in the Little River area.  Pam K.  (my wikitree screen name Pam K. here, but pjk999pjk on findagrave).  I also run several Facebook groups, including a study group for the Descendants of Zachariah Allen & Lavina Jones Allen or Mary Woody Allen.
In reading your post i realize that my daughters have some connection to you with the Hadley, Lindley, Pyle families.  I have just started researching their lineage.  I actually may have a Ward connection.   I have many Quaker families PA/VA/NC/IN/OH since they came in the 1670-1720s.  We may have more connections as well.

Sue
My Ward line is William Ward m.  Susannah Foulke in PA and moved to Cane Creek MM NC;  Anthony Ward m. Priscilla Lamb in NC, who moved to Wayne County, Indiana, then to Morgan County, Indiana.  Anthony and Priscilla's son Stephen Ward, married Adaline Baxter who was born across the state line in Butler County, Ohio.  Adaline was the daughter of Thomas Baxter & Lydia Murphy Baxter.  Stephen and Adaline moved to Rock Island County, Illinois, but moved back to Morgan County as they did not feel safe there in Rock Island.  This Ward family is very large and the female names are repetitious throughout the generations.

Hi Pam. We would love to have you as members of the project. There is an "answer" link at the bottom of the post, right beside the "comment" link. Would you please click answer and tell us about what you would like to work on in the Quakers Project, things like profiles for certain family names or locations, finding new resources, etc. Make sure you are logged in when you answer so that I will be able to find your profile and add your badge. Sorry to be difficult, it's an administrative thing.  Thanks!

Thank you for the reply Debi!  I have been researching my own Quaker ancestors within eastern Hendricks and Morgan and southwest Marion counties in Indiana for over 40 years.  I grew up in a Quaker community where I presently live.  I live near five active Quaker Monthly meetings and at least 10 Quaker cemeteries in these counties. My primary experience lies in this area in walking these cemeteries for many years and the families who settled here from North Carolina and Ohio and local court record lookups in Hendricks County.  I have been fulfilling find a grave requests in these cemeteries for many years and will be gearing up to fulfill tombstone/gravesite photo requests this season. These local friends burying grounds include:  Sugar Grove, Fairfield, Lick Branch, Mill Creek, Hadley, Center, Easton  (West Newton), Bridgeport, White Lick (West White Lick, Morgan County), West Union, Bethel, and Highland.

Debi, I hope this is the information you are looking for.

I've awarded your badge for the Quakers Project, Pam. Thanks for joining us. Your next step will be to join the discussion group (link from the Project Page) where we do discuss how to improve Quaker profiles (among other things).

I commented on the Indiana Quakers page but I'll put it here too. While I was looking for pioneer records in Indiana, I found a short couple of paragraphs about a Huggart settlement in Indiana that said it was a Quaker settlement that played a role in abolishing slavery.  Have you heard of this?

Thanks, Rhonda. I hadn't heard of the settlement. I did a quick Google search and found this page Local African American History on The History Museum of South Bend, Indiana.

I'm interested in joining. I have a 4xgreat grandfather who was remembered as a "very able preacher" for the Quakers, and many people from his line of the family also belonged to the Society of Friends.

We would love to have yo as part of the Quakers Project, Austin.  We like to include a little information about surnames & locations in the badge description. Would you share some more details so it can award your badge?
Some of the relevant surnames are Wooton, Hixon, and Stuart. They were scattered around the midwest, but most of my relatives were centered at the Yearly Meeting in West Elkton, OH.

Welcome to the Quakers Project, Austin. I have awarded your badge. Your next step will be to join the Google email list (link on the Project Page) where we do discuss how to improve Quaker profiles (among other things). My ancestor, Thomas Shield, was sentenced to 20 lashes for affiliating with Quakers in Northumberland County Virginia in the 1660s. He released his indentured servants early, he represented a prominent Quaker from London in a Virginia court. Yet he is "officially" Anglican. Closet Quaker?
by Glenn Major G2G1 (1.2k points)
Definitely a sympathizer. Did his descendants stay with the Anglican church or show up in Quaker records?
Thomas soon relocated across the Chesapeake Bay to more religiously tolerant Maryland. His grandson's relocated to more religiously tolerant Pennsylvania. But, no future Quaker associations.

I would like to join the Quaker project.  I have several family members in the  Earl, Benedict, Hull and Aldrich lineages with death dates and marriage dates missing that I’m hoping might be available through the group resources.  Acceptance into the group would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Andrew Murphy

I would like to have access to the Quaker Project expertise in order to prepare some of the profiles I manage, collaboratively, for inclusion in this category. Sometimes it takes a while to get to the next stage on Wiki - I've been working on Browne-440 for eight years and always thought it was part of the Penn Project in some way but now see it has flagged an Error - 923 code, which by the way, is and isn't a surprise. Anyways, we move ahead, and Browne-440 better fits with the Pre-1700 Quaker Category as Richard was born and died in England while his sons became prominent Pennsylvanian Quakers. I'd like to ask a Leader or Coordinator to take a look at the suggestion regarding badges and membership and let me know how to proceed please. There are other profiles but we can get to them in time. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Jenny
by Jenny Mortimer G2G Crew (940 points)
Sorry for the delay, Jenny, I was travelling. I took a look at your suggestions list to see the profiles with 9xx suggestions. There were two, Richard Browne and Moses Embree.

For Richard Browne, the suggestion was caused because of the profile is Project Protected (PPP) but doesn't have any project as a co-manager and doesn't have a Project Box. Looking at the Changes Log, it appears that the protection was put in place to make sure the spelling stayed as Browne. Because there have been numerous merges, I felt that it was best to leave him as PPP. I was also able to find an image of the Northamptonshire burial register at Ancestry, so I added a citation to that. I added the Quakers Project as a co-manager and added the project box.

For Moses Embree, the suggestion is being caused by there being a Project Box for the Quakers Project but the project isn't a co-manager. Since there doesn't appear to be any controversy with that profile and it has lots of co-managers, I don't thing the Quakers Project needs to help manage. Instead, change {{Quakers}} to {{Quakers_Sticker}}. That will change the project box to a sticker and fix the suggestion.

I hope this helps!
Thanks Debi, that was helpful and I've changed over to the sticker on Moses Embree. Is there cross-over on the Penn Quaker project?

As I research Quakers on both sides of the pond, perhaps I need to join both. Anyways, I would like to join the Quaker project regardless - please advise.

Jenny

Hello

I would like to join the Quaker Project.  I have been researching my lineage and found Quakers in Virginia.  Leftwich and Johnson so far.

I am looking to learn more and over the years I have found that collaboration in research in learning is preferable to trying to do it by oneself.

Thank You

I am interested in joining the Quaker project.  My Griffins lived in Flushing, New York in the 1700's  and were Quakers.  My Todhunter and Marke families of Bowscale, Cumberland, England were Quakers from about 1650 until the mid 1800's.

My Quaker ancestry begins with gateway ancestor, Capt. William Lawrence, of Flushing. One of three judges at The Flushing Remonstrance. His grandsons by Thomas Stevenson who married Elizabeth Lawrence, each marry daughters of Speaker Samuel Jenings. He's often given the honorific Governor, but he only used Lt. Governor. He is the primary signatory of the First Constitution of the Province of West New Jersey, in America, the 25th of the Ninth Month Called November, 1681. This predates Pennsylvania. He was Speaker of the New York & New Jersey Assemblies in 1707 & delivered the Remonstrance of Lord Cornbury. He died the following year. 'Samuel Smith's History of New Jersey, 1765. [Chp XVIII] Are there "spaces" for The Flushing Remonstrance & The Remonstrance of Lord Cornbury? Would you like spaces for those who are named, signatories, and/or in the room? Do I need pre-1700 badge?

I have published a 256 page book [SLFHL 929.273 V685v] that documents generation by generation, these, and other Pilgrim families. Recent information has set my task to republish the book as Peter Schmuck & Asenath Chapman, 1817-1837, Descendant by Whatsoever Surname. I'll be a Chapman Family Association member when the check clears. I can, and am, adding another 256 pages on Asenath's history, which leads to William Wentworth, The Elder. Another gateway ancestor and through the Blount descent, to Charlemagne. NYHBR 1882.  Through Sancha de Alaya to Rodrigo Diaz, El Cid. RD900, Gary Boyd Roberts, 2018. GPC. (my mom is a Col Thos Ligon descendant)

Welcome to the project, Chas. I've awarded your badge. Free Space pages for the two items you mentioned would be great. I took a look at the pages you have created for your family Bibles and it doesn't look like you'll have any questions on the process. If I'm wrong, give me a shout.

Hi Cynthia. If you would like to show your affiliation with the Quakers Project, you can add the Quakers Sticker to profiles, including your own. Here's the help page for the sticker. Let me know if you have any questions about that.

If you would like to be actively involved in the upkeep of profiles and pages for the Quakers Project, please make sure you are logged in first. Then add a new comment and I'll get your badge awarded. Thanks
