How can I undo this merge?

Hi Chris,
I received the following email and don't know who to correct it.  I'm also perplexed about the email saying he is not a member; not sure if I should proceed.  Can you please help?   Thanks, Cathy

From Donald Gradeless,
I see you merged my Ellen Newton born 1598 to change her to be a woman born more than 100 years later? Do you have an explanation why she was born 100 years before your Elinor Newton??? Is there a way I can undo what you have done which is a very very obvious error as the child cannot be born before their supposed parents.

The sender, Donald Gradeless, is not a WikiTree member.

Hi Cathy,

Merges can't be undone, so when this happens you generally have to create a new profile for the person who's profile was incorrectly merged away. However, in this case, I did a quick search and it looks like there are several profiles for an Ellen Newton born in 1598, as well as 2 profiles for Elinor Newton, one born in 1598 and one born in 1623.

So, to get this cleaned up, you just need to decide on a final profile ID (eg. Newton-233) for each of those two people, and merge any duplicates into them. Then (this is the hard part), look at the people who are connected to each profile. Some of them may by connected to the wrong person because of the incorrect merge. So you'll need to edit the relationships to get spouses, children, etc. connected to the right person.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any problems getting this sorted out! :)

Actually, I just did a bit of Googling, and it looks like these may actually be the same person... But I'm no expert on Mayflower genealogy. I'd recommend looking into it more before making any drastic changes!
