Should Icelandic last names be corrected to original spelling and punctuation?

That would be great, for both names and locations- I don't have the Icelandic keyboard (although I know how to access it);  I am always concerned about spellings, the names being so long compared to English.  I would love to have a 'template that also has the major locations, so I could do it correctly the first time and not always making corrections.

I can switch to Icelandic keyboard layout on the fly and have recently gotten lots of practice with it while adding some of my ancestors and sources from Icelandic census data. If you need help in that area for any of your profiles, I am happy to be of assistance.

Is there any reason why they shouldn't?
by Leif Biberg Kristensen G2G6 Pilot (207k points)
Except for the fact that I do not have the access to do so unless I am the creator or on the trusted list of the profile, I personally have no reason why they shouldn't hence the existence of my question since I see so many that are not.

Ah, that's the same as when I see a LNAB like "Jorgensen" on a Norwegian and am unable to do anything about it. Except by creating a "clone" profile with the correct spelling, initiate a merge, and then wait for 30 days if the PM isn't responding.

But, even as a Norwegian, I'm very shaky on Icelandic spelling. It's extremely idiosyncratic, even if it's resembling old Norse.

I haven't seen anything like an Iceland project around here, but it would be very nice if some of you with Icelandic roots got something together.

Edit: It seems like Oddur Jóakimsson has tried to create an Iceland project.

If you can figure out how we can do that, then I’m in.

The language is a bit tricky and there are a lot of aspects to consider.

Like Icelandic names have a fixed modern spellings but older sources have other variations. Which should be used?

Somebody should probably write up a page about Icelandic naming conventions as applied to WikiTree, like what we've done for Norway: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Norway_Project_Naming_Conventions
