March 2019 Biography Builders - One Name Studies

Question

This month’s Bio Builders Challenge theme is people who are in, or could be added to, a One Name Study.

Thank you for your support.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

• birth date/place
• names of parents
• marriage date/place and spouse name
• names of children, if any
• death date/place

Biography Section:

• Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
• Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
• As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
• Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
• Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
• List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
• Some list siblings. (I think this takes up real estate.)
• Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
• Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
• Categories.
• Connection to the Global Tree.
• All duplicates merged or initiated.
• Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
• Historical context as related to the person's life.

Ok. I have read all the instructions and am still slightly confused. I have never done a One Name Study. Do I basically just work on one line in my family tree that all has the same last name?

One name or one place studies are formal projects with a project manager.  From what I've seen, most are total busts.  The intention of most of these studies is to disambiguate lines of families with the same name and its variants, e.g., Dotson and Dodson.  Same family but various lines.

I just don't understand what this has to do with the people on our watch lists that need better bios.

Most of us have an unusual name or two in our trees.  For some of these, people have set up pages to look at the names, their history and how they connect.  Mine is below as I have a peculiar surname.  And sometime this year I am going to tackle the Debaute family from Louisiana.  They're easy to set up and quite fun.

There are hundreds of surnames at the One Name Study link that Ros provided. I'd bet a paycheck that there are a few surnames there that are also on your personal tree. :)

I'm new, as well. I have the Crooke's in my family tree. They are listed as Crook and Crooke in the census. I also found some names in my watchlist that DO have name studies - Smith, for example ;) My dad's last name is Inglett - and I've always wondered about them. He's not genetically related to me, but Inglett is still a fascinating name - and I do have some of his relatives on my watch list.

I also have many German's in my family line. But, my DNA found some Jewish, so I want to see if some of those Germans that came to America in the Early 1900s were actually Jewish. But I'm adopted and know little about my father's family line (since my paternal grandfather was an orphan), so it could also be from his side.

So, I'll be looking at some of their names as well. I find developing the profiles is really the best way for me to get to "know" my ancestors and learn about who they were. I'm excited about this one. We could be "newbie buddies" :)

Even if you decide not to do this challenge this month, I do hope you find a lot of connections and learn something new about your people.

I totally agree and know how you feel about really getting to "know" the histories of our family members by working on profiles and biographies. It's a lot of work, but I'm having fun with it. This is one of the main reasons I'm a fan of WikiTree. :)

Mary Burditt is remarkable.  How upset will you be if her name is corrected to her name at death by one of her Burditt descendants?  I always find this a difficult decision . . . which name should be on the profile.  Often when a second marriage has no children, the children bury the woman as their mother with their father's name . . . and that makes sense.  But when there is surviving issue from both husbands, there could be conflict.

Well she certainly spent more time as a Burditt than as a Trueblood.  I believe the Wikitree guidelines say it should be the last name.  I would have no real issue with that.  I have not tried to see if her Burditt sons line continues down the generations.  I do know there are a few Truebloods left in England today descended from her son William and there are many thousands of Truebloods in America descended from her son John.

I've been wanting to focus more on the Wheeler One Name Study as it relates to my Stonington, New London, Connecticut, One Place Study, and want to get the profiles without bios completed (a goal since I started the Study back in August 2016, but haven't been able to focus on like I've wanted to. Update: In Progress on two...had to connect wife to her parents first and so it's taken me a little longer to get something done...research first. Update 2: Had to back track a little, some information I was waiting on for a month finally came through.
