March 2019 Biography Builders - One Name Studies

This month’s Bio Builders Challenge theme is people who are in, or could be added to, a One Name Study.

Thank you for your support.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • names of children, if any
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • Some list siblings. (I think this takes up real estate.)
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

Here is a list of all the One Name Studies on WikiTree.  Use the A-Z picker near the top of the page to choose a name!
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:One_Name_Studies

Then click on the words 'WhateverName Name Study' just under the coloured box, and it will take you to a list of all the profiles in that Study. Choose one, and write a bio!
Beaugh One Name  Study

Richard One Name  Study

are the two that I have started but really do not know how to add or contribute more to these Studies - I will print out & read your suggestions

above & see if I can do anything - guess I would need someone to get me started  as I had help a few years back when I started Beaugh One Name Study  I am  older now & tend to forget  -

             Martha  Beaugh-15     Leger
Great turnout this month, and great numbers. Lots of stickers to pass out in April.

Write a biography related to one of your two study names and add the sticker under the == Biography == header.

{{One Name Study|name= Beaugh}}

or

{{One Name Study|name= Richard}}

The profile will then show up in the study.  Click on the category for the study and you will see them.

Sorry, can't delete

Er...Keith: it's not March any more... wink

Thank you Ros. I must not have been paying attention on what month it was for. Next time I better look what I am answering first.

I will do this month especially it doesn't use the tracker.

Ok. I have read all the instructions and am still slightly confused. I have never done a One Name Study. Do I basically just work on one line in my family tree that all has the same last name?
by Alicia Taylor G2G6 Mach 8 (88.2k points)
One name or one place studies are formal projects with a project manager.  From what I've seen, most are total busts.  The intention of most of these studies is to disambiguate lines of families with the same name and its variants, e.g., Dotson and Dodson.  Same family but various lines.

I just don't understand what this has to do with the people on our watch lists that need better bios.
Alicia,

Most of us have an unusual name or two in our trees.  For some of these, people have set up pages to look at the names, their history and how they connect.  Mine is below as I have a peculiar surname.  And sometime this year I am going to tackle the Debaute family from Louisiana.  They're easy to set up and quite fun.

Here is my Haywood Name Study:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Haywood_Name_Study

and if you click on the words 'Haywood Name Study' just under the coloured box, you will be taken to its category page, which is a list of all the Haywoods I have included in the Study.  Then, for this BioBuilders Challenge, you would just pick one and write a bio for it! smiley

Kathy,

If you have a family line on your watchlist that needs better bios, check to see if there is an existing name study (ONS) for the famil name. If there is, add the ONS category, and do bios. If there is no ONS, see the G2G post at: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/742714/one-name-studies-project-request-your-2019-name-study-here , add start an ONS, if you want, and write bios.

Thanks everyone. That does help. It was pretty close to what I thought it was. I am up to give it a try.

Kathy,

You are such a good writer, plus you have an unusual surname.  I am surprised you haven't set one up yourself.  They're fun!
Kathy:

There are hundreds of surnames at the One Name Study link that Ros provided. I'd bet a paycheck that there are a few surnames there that are also on your personal tree. :)
See comment in above answer.
Kathy,

I'm new, as well. I have the Crooke's in my family tree. They are listed as Crook and Crooke in the census. I also found some names in my watchlist that DO have name studies - Smith, for example ;) My dad's last name is Inglett - and I've always wondered about them. He's not genetically related to me, but Inglett is still a fascinating name - and I do have some of his relatives on my watch list.

I also have many German's in my family line. But, my DNA found some Jewish, so I want to see if some of those Germans that came to America in the Early 1900s were actually Jewish. But I'm adopted and know little about my father's family line (since my paternal grandfather was an orphan), so it could also be from his side.

So, I'll be looking at some of their names as well. I find developing the profiles is really the best way for me to get to "know" my ancestors and learn about who they were. I'm excited about this one. We could be "newbie buddies" :)

Even if you decide not to do this challenge this month, I do hope you find a lot of connections and learn something new about your people.
Alicia:

I totally agree and know how you feel about really getting to "know" the histories of our family members by working on profiles and biographies. It's a lot of work, but I'm having fun with it. This is one of the main reasons I'm a fan of WikiTree. :)
Yes. I am on other sites, but this is the one that really encourages you to do more than simply gather data.
Way to go, Kathy!  You are truly an inspiration!

I am in this month.  Unsurprisingly, mine will come from the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Trueblood_Name_Study.

1. Let's start with the Granddaddy of them all, the common Trueblood ancestor: John Trueblood of Belton in Lincolnshire: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-291 He was born sometime in the reign of Henry VIII.

2. Thomas Trueblood of Belton: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-289 Tudor blacksmith and swankeeper.

3. John Trueblood of Claypole in Lincolnshire: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-288 Stuart blacksmith and Quaker convert.
by Stephen Trueblood G2G6 Mach 7 (75.7k points)
edited by Stephen Trueblood
4. Next up is Arnold Trueblood, Quaker martyr, who died in Lincoln Gaol for his beliefs: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-285

5. And his remarkable wife, Mary, a woman who buries three husbands: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hoyse-2
And now a few of the immigrants:

6. John Trueblood (1654-92)  The first Trueblood in America https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-98

7. Agnes Trueblood (1656-92) His wife https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fisher-3324

8. John Trueblood (1689-1734) Their eldest son https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-141

9. Amos Trueblood (1691-1759) Their younger son https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-10
10. And here is the first one from the Debaute family study: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Debaute-2  He was my great x4 grandfather.  It's a miracle he managed to retire and die in his bed!
Mary Burditt is remarkable.  How upset will you be if her name is corrected to her name at death by one of her Burditt descendants?  I always find this a difficult decision . . . which name should be on the profile.  Often when a second marriage has no children, the children bury the woman as their mother with their father's name . . . and that makes sense.  But when there is surviving issue from both husbands, there could be conflict.
Well she certainly spent more time as a Burditt than as a Trueblood.  I believe the Wikitree guidelines say it should be the last name.  I would have no real issue with that.  I have not tried to see if her Burditt sons line continues down the generations.  I do know there are a few Truebloods left in England today descended from her son William and there are many thousands of Truebloods in America descended from her son John.
It might be interesting to see if the Burditt line continues, too.
11. And another Debaute is done:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Debaute-1 Author, prisoner, exile, newspaperman, playwright, duelist, twice married and dead at forty!  Over Achiever!
Really nice bio for Prudent.  Where did you find his death bed letter?
A distant cousin has it in her papers, handed down over six generations. I have some silverware belonging to his son, Louis Prudent.  Must write his biography soon

Hi Stephen

Can you add your profile as a numbered list it is easier to count them up at the end of the challange and add them to the challange sheet

Thanks

No problem!  I've numbered them now...  11 this month...  So far...

12. Norman Trueblood: the only Trueblood killed in the Great War: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Trueblood-373

A round dozen for the month, pretty good for me!

Comment: I was unable to spend any time on this after all. Hoping next month will be better!

Thank you. I will try this challenge this month. Hopefully, some of my ancestors already have name studies because I am not in a hurry to head up my own official project just yet. But if not, I will open one for the Crooke's in my family.

Do we just list the names we worked on in our comment like we did last month?

Your Adam Crooke is a really interesting chap.  Amazing to have survived that much Civil War fighting.  And I love the Irish Sticker, I'm going to borrow that for some of my Irish ancestors!

There are two you can use:
{{Irish_Clans}} For people with Irish Roots

{{Ireland_Native}} For people born in Ireland.

If you have many, you may want to consider joining the Irish Roots Project

Will be starting to work on the "Kermode" side of my family. There currently isn't a ONS created so I will be creating one. There area quite a few who resided on the Isle of Man. This is going to be long process, but it's time to get busy and start the work.

I'm in - I've been wanting to get some more of my ancestors plugged into their applicable ONS or create one if it doesn't already exist.

1. Samuel H. Baty (abt. 1830 - 1912)
2. Wesley John Benskin (1837 - 1908)
3. Virgie Ella (Ulmer) Baty (1914 - 1993)

While I usually hate those bios that have a table of contents with three total paragraphs, the organization used for Samuel H. Baty is very effective.  I may consider using it myself as it is sometimes difficult to compact information in a few paragraphs.

I'm in for this month. I've been wanting to focus more on the Wheeler One Name Study as it relates to my Stonington, New London, Connecticut, One Place Study, and want to get the profiles without bios completed (a goal since I started the Study back in August 2016, but haven't been able to focus on like I've wanted to. Update: In Progress on two...had to connect wife to her parents first and so it's taken me a little longer to get something done...research first. Update 2: Had to back track a little, some information I was waiting on for a month finally came through.

Jonathan Andrew Wheeler: full biography with inline citations (too bad I can't include his wife and her tragic story...just created her.)

Charles Phelps Wheeler Jr: add full biography with inline citations

Thomas Wheeler: add full biography including the story about how he died with inline citations (this was a 3 for the price of one for me)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  This looks like a nightmare . . . or fun--depending on how much you like untangling several balls of string.
IKR, Kathy! *tiptoeing silently backwards*
Fortunately, the descendants of Robert Harrington are well documented, and many names are repeated many, many times. It’s fun to “root” around this family.
My husband's family has a lot of William Crooked and Adam Crooke .It has been interesting figuring them all out
I also have to laugh at "a real one-name study."
