Seeking birthplace of William Mathews 1819-1851

Question

Still seeking birthplace for WILLIAM MATHEWS , born 1819 location unknown , died Jhelum, India. Married Mary 1818-1858 , died Howrah, India.

William employed by HEIC as Patrol Office , later, Deputy Collector of Customs, Punjab.

William sired 7 children, first three from Mary, fourth and fifth by a native woman, sixth and seventh by another native woman. However the most important fact that is holding up further research is where did William come from ??

Spelling Variations vary,that is a common occurance ,most could not

read write or spell.So people taking there info had too guess how it was spelled.One T or 2 T  do not fret.

However it now seems that my relative spelt his surname with only one T although all his 7 children were baptised with the two T spelling of MATTHEWS. I don’t know why as he was a relatively educated man employed by both HEIC and Indian Civil Service and wrote his own will.

So now I am still seeking the birthplace of William MATHEWS born 1819 - location unknown and died 1871 Jhelum, India.

In your initial question, William Mathews is shown as 1819-1851 yet in your comment you show his death as being in 1871. Is the 1871 death correct?

If you were to go to familysearch.org and enter William Mathews born 1819 you would find at least 60 of them in England. All 60 spell the last name with one "T."  There may be more than 60, but I have only checked the first 3 pages at 20 per page.

Thank you. I don't know how to determine his birth location. So far, there are at least sixty named William Mathews born in 1819 in England. How to discern which location to choose. It's also possible that he was born in Scotland or Wales. Maybe someone will be able to offer insight to resolve the puzzle of his birth location.

Well 60 is manageable in terms of narrowing down the search so are you able to do that using  1871 as his last day on earth and location of Jhelum in India ?

No, it was strictly men named William Mathews who were born in England in 1819. I used familysearch.org and their information regarding the birth year is confined only to the birth or christening.

I have done what I can and perhaps someone else can provide a more comprehensive answer to your question.

Americans often dropped the tt in favor of a single t in the name Mathew/Matthews etc.

William Mathews b 12 Dec 1819 at Paul, Cornwall, England. Father was Thomas and mother was Ann.

William Mathews born 10 May 1819 in Suffolk, England. Father was Edward and mother was Sophia.

There were other men named William Mathews who were born in England in 1819 also.

I don't know how to determine which one was the right William Mathews.

It appears that William Mathews was born in America.  he is listed in the records as an American. It was staring at me in the face for ages... and decided to look one more time for more clues as to his several wives.

I don't believe Mary Ann Trett was one of his wives as their marriage document shows his birth date as 1829 not 1819.

quite possibly she was American...
