Did you know 'Born in' stickers are now available for Australia?

Following on from the discussion late last year we have created 'Born in' stickers for post Federation Australia (1901-date).  They use the Australia and State and Territory Flags.

The template page is here - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Australia_Sticker

We are also considering other stickers for Australia and have been adding them to this list as they are suggested. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Australia_Project_Boxes_and_Stickers_-_List_of

I found those the other day .. which rendered my self-made ones no longer needed! smiley

That help page says "You can also add county as a parameter. "

Shouldn't that say "State"?
Good pick up - I'll fix that!
Yeah, I've used them about a dozen times. Nice.
Thank you for adding this sticker and state/territory option.
Thanks Veronica. Excellent work!

That’s very cool! I imagine we have those for other countries. Where would I find them?

If they don't exist, you can make your own.
They should all be here, but I don't think all of them are, but its a good start!

Melanie, you should not be making your own stickers.
Yeah you can.  Using existing template for "religion" or "occupation".
Oh .. and if that's no longer allowed .. it should be announced.
The help pages state that the name of the Sticker template should clearly communicate what it is used for. This is why the Occupation sticker was created (religion was being used before).

Each sticker also states what purposes it should be used for. See this convo (and my answer which was similar to yours at first): https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/724720/do-we-need-a-sticker-template-for-occupations?show=724873#a724873

I don't want to be a troublemaker but shouldn't it say

"born on Christmas/Norfolk Island"

"born in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands"

Very minor issue though. Great to see stuff happening

NT Flag as well. Australian territories have much better flags than states... Just saying!

Hello Simon

The flag images were all taken from here:- https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Australian_Flag_Images

Are you saying they are incorrect? Any born in sticker we want needs a corresponding flag here. I can raise the on/in issue.

They look to be coming out all right to me, or am I missing something?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Australia_Project_Boxes_and_Stickers_-_List_of

ACT    Australian_Capital_Territory

NT  Northern_Territory

Cocos/Keeling Cocos_(Keeling)_Islands

The flags showing for those on the page is  Cocos (Keeling) Islands flag

Mmmm - I see!  Will see what I can do.
Sorry, I was on a 7-hour bus ride.

Yes, Melanie got it. I added to ACT flag to my profile and got the Australian Flag in the preview. I had actually never seen it in detail before.

It is funny that whenever there is a debate on whether to change the Australian Flag we never think about the flags of the states.
Seven hour bus ride in Australia, Simon; you must have just been down the road.

I believe the problem with the 3 stickers have now been fixed any stickers you have already placed on the profile should automatically update.

If you used abbreviations they won't, you need to write them out in full , eg Australian Capital Territory etc as outlined on the template page.

If any are not working please post them here.

I hate to be picky, but ".. .. .. was born in Capital Territory, Australia." just looks weird and totally wrong.

It should be (with or without the "the") "Australian Capital Territory" (I don't honestly think it needs another Australia to follow).  It's not "Capital Territory, Australia".  The official name is not "Capital Territory". (The Australian Capital Territory was known as the Federal Capital Territory until 1938.)

I don't know that I've ever seen the/The Northern Territory, without a "the" i.e. The Northern Territory (officially the Northern Territory of Australia) .. but I could live with it without a "the" if that's too picky even for picky.

.

(Isn't tweaking things fun?!  smiley )

Could be the way the stickers are coded. I think it is the same for the language stickers. It seems the stickers are generated from a database. So we might have to live with getting the conjunctions wrong for the Territories and the Islands. @Steven Harris may know more about this.

But @Melanie is correct. it should be the Australian Capital Territory, Australia.

Thank you to whoever made the effort to change the flags. It is appreciated. I would be happy to do some of these things myself and it would probably make things more efficient.

Although having worked as an editor for an open data project in the past, I can appreciate that getting the balance right between editorial control to keep the developers satisfied that problems are not going to be created but enabling crowdsourced accuracy can be a bit of a fine line.
Should now be updated, hopefully they are all ok!

Lookin' gooooooooood!  smiley

There is one more confusing bit.

Currently, the code  -- {{Australia Sticker|Australian Capital Territory}} does not work.

The sticker has changed but the code to place it on your profile is still

{{Australia Sticker|Capital Territory}}

This is not very intuitive and probably should be updated as well.

The only other thing is  "born on Cocos Islands" perhaps should be "born on the Cocos Islands".

Thanks

I have been through my WatchList and added the stickers for those profiles born 1901 and later.

When will the colonial stickers be ready? Is the thinking along the lines of, say, Colony of Victoria, Colonial Australia or the like or will just Colony of Victoria nail it since that was what it was known as 1851 - 1901?
by Leslie Cooper G2G6 Mach 4 (48.3k points)

Yes - that’s the idea.  It will be finalised soon as part of the project reorganisation.  You can add ideas for other stickers here - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Australia_Project_Boxes_and_Stickers_-_List_of

Along these lines (not being able to find a suitable thead)

The Colony of New South Wales (1788 - 1900)

The Colony of Victoria (1851 - 1900). Before 1851 the Colony of Victoria was a district of New South Wales known as the Port Phillip District.

The Colony of Tasmania (1856 - 1900).

Van Diemen's Land (1825–1856)

The Province of South Australia (1836–1900) independence from NSW in 1836

The Swan River Colony (1829–1832)

The Colony of Western Australia (1832–1900)

The Colony of Queensland (1859 - 1900)

The Northern Territory

 • Established by NSW 1825

 • Transferred to South Australia 1862

 • Transferred to Commonwealth 1911

 • Dissolved 1927

 • Reformed 1931
