We have a 1910 family wedding photo that we call "big hats". I hope I followed all the steps correctly so others can see it and maybe identify their Burgess, Ribbens, Hydon (bride) or Cockman (groom) forebears.

Smaller white hats seemed to be the trend in this mid-50's wedding reception.  I don't know the people in here, but it was for a family wedding.

My grandfather and his two older brothers at their house in Brooklyn about 1915. The little fellow missing teeth in the foreground is unidentified, but I think his expression is priceless. Tom, in the middle, may have already been working as a pen maker in a fountain pen shop by then, hence the fancy clothing. Jack (on the left) later joined the pen shop, but eventually became a NYC police officer. My grandfather (on the right) signed up for WW1 at age 16 (lied about his age as he was tall enough to be convincing), he married on his 21st birthday, became a carpenter, police officer and fireman, then died in a diving accident when he was only 27.

This is my mother, Dorothy, with my brother & me, ready for church when we lived, briefly, in Huntsville, Alabama.  Two of us have hats!  We were there for 18 months while my father learned about Corporal Missile at Redstone Arsenal.  It was so long ago that the family travelled from UK to the US by Cunard liner.

P.S. I can't work out how to get the picture to show!

My mother wore a hat to church for several years then quit when it went out of style, but my grandmother never quit. The gloves, too!

My great grandparents Ada G. Napier and Howard W. Ragland ready to go to town. I descend from Virginia farming and coal mining families that didn't have fancy hats. This photo is from 1945-46.

I posted the photo of my great grandparents Ragland and entered the Hat Challenge. I also mentioned I don't have photos of fancy hats, although the men in my family always wore hats when they left the house, Dress hat or Fedora type. So I thought I would share a photo of me in a fancy hat. I was at my friends antique shop in Lake Tahoe trying on some old hats. Hope you enjoy this memory.

In my Hunter family we all wore hats, but this photo is from my Hunter One-Name Study and  probably a Hunter cousin of mine.

He is David Hunter 2nd  of Blackness, 3rd of Balskelly.  One of his projects in Scotland was to start a new town Carnoustie and wearing his hat doesn't he look the part of a Scottish titled person?

This is my great-great-great-grandfather, Phil Curry. I think he looks like the quintessential image of an Ozarks farmer, with his hat and his pipe and his overall.

I imagine he probably was the quintessential Ozarks farmer. This photo was probably taken around 1920 or so, near the border of Missouri and Arkansas. 

His father's name was Oliver, which is also the name of my three year old son. But I named my son before I knew about my ancestor.

Cool picture.  Candid photos from this time are rare, they usually only took picture when dressed up for church or something, this shows his authentic self, ripped overalls, log cabin, and all.

This is a magnificent photo! Reminds me of a photo I have of my g-grandfather on his North Carolina farm about this same time dressed exactly like this.

This is my father dressed in his Civil Guard uniform. The hat, called "tricornio" (tricorn hat), is the most recognizable part of the uniform here in Spain.

This is one of my favorite photos ever. This sweetheart is my fourth great grandmother, Elizabeth (Powers) Hubbard (1783 - 1859). Just look at that face and oh, that bonnet. How could I not be in love with her?

This is my great grandfather, in his top-hat. He was a policeman for the railroad, who became Chief of Police for the New York Central Railroad.

Thank you I will try to post the second photo here,  it is my Grandma, taken at Llandrindod Wells in Wales about 1890.  The family used to go there every year to 'take the waters' at the Spa.

My great aunt, Ellen Inez "Nez" Westmoreland, who died long before I was born at the very young age of 25 in 1926. Although I did not know her my mother made sure that I knew of her. She lived a full, if short, life, fully embracing the changes that were taking place for women in the early to mid-1920s. Her scrapbook contained photos, poems, newspaper clippings, letters, and greeting cards. This is one of my favorite photos of her.

I believe that the hat and dress that my great-grandmother wore in this 1885 photo were both very stylish in that era. The height and clean lines of the hat are a departure from the brimmed hats and bonnets that we often see in old photos.

I haven't been able to find any old photos with relatives, so I'm posting this of myself (since I can't upload the group photo of my friends). It is not my best hat, but it gets the idea across. I am a Red Hatter and proud of it. It is a world-wide organization and it's goal is to have FUN. Our uniform, as such, is purple clothing and red hats with lots of Bling. On our birthday months we wear red with purple hats.  Anyone else a Red Hatter?

This picture from a family wedding shows schoolboy cap, Piller box had to assorted  other hats but no big hats, then this is a northern wedding and it is windy up by the church.
