Transclusion on Wikitable sortable?

A project wikitable sortable has become very long as project members have added ancestors.  Does anyone know how to create a transclusion such as "jump to" for a particular letter in the first column?

Try

[[#A|A]] [[#B|B]] ...

{| border
|-
|<span id="A"></span>A first row
|etc
|-
|<span id="B"></span>B etc
|etc
|}
This assumes that column 1 is manually sorted alphabetically in the source form.

Won't work sensibly if the reader sorts the table on a different column.

But you can add anchors in other columns.

The trick is to put the anchor on whichever row should come up first in each group.  There's no way to get the system to figure out which that is automatically.
Thank-you for thoughts!  My initial idea was similar to the TOC templates that place and use the anchors in categories and free spaces. ex: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Category_TOC_FS after reading disclaimer at bottom of Space:Category_TOC-2 I'm taking it slow.
That page was written as a template, but only so that it could be re-used in different places.  It doesn't need to be a template to function.

But it's for navigating the member listings on category pages.  It doesn't need to plant any anchors, because those pages come with their own navigation system, using the from= parameter in the URL.

Your problem here is that the system doesn't create any anchors in tables, you have to put them in yourself.

One option would be to split the tables by letter, then use the span trick to create your navigation jumps, but this will break the purpose of sorting in other columns.

A silly question from me though - is having the table important? If you are categorizing these profiles, wouldn't the logical place to look be in the categories themselves? At what point will the table become so large it becomes unmanageable?

The table is already large and errors occur frequently. Some people do correct it from time to time, but I'm afraid it is getting too large to make scrolling through it when editing an easy thing.
